C7 all the way for me. Makes no sense to me to take a $20K car and turn it into a $40K performer if you can just buy the $40K performer stock, meaning it was engineered that way so less trouble in the long run.

In addition, if you care about this (although I don't really care much about resale value), the $20K turned $40K car will lose its value back down to $20K almost immediately. It will take the Vette much longer to get down there.

I will agree with @Jtrem though, the 86 (at least stock ones) are more "fun" on the streets because you can hone them around without breaking 85 separate laws.

This is what it comes down to IMO.

The only reason I can see for taking the 86 is the smaller size/weight and better feedback. If that's along the lines of what you're thinking, you should look into a c5z. From those I know who've tracked multiple generations of Z06's, the c5 seems to offer the best feedback and lightest weight. That's probably the route I'd go.

Ill tell you one thing. The 86 is a lot easier to drive at its limit and have fun.

Getting even close halfway to the limit of the vette on the track and you better pucker that a$$ up. It will throw you around if you don't know what you are doing or get too cocky.

So that being said it will depend on your driving experience. I've had high HP cars and tracked them.

I still find the S2k and the 86 to be the most enjoyable cars at the track.

You dont need 400+ hp to have fun at the track. Especially in a car that handles well.

If you want a car thats like the 86 in terms of handling but with more power and better suited for tracking out the box look at the first gen Cayman S
Lots of win here on many points. I know incredible drivers that just don't like driving Vettes for the same reasons. It just isn't worth the potential wadding up factor when there are better handling cars out there.

Anyone can just mash the throttle on the straights and get good lap times no expertise in that.

If you are looking for a challenge in the garage and some feel good on track, 86. If you are looking for a challenge on track and easy garage, c7.

But the point is beating yourself, not someone else. The c7 is more challenging to continue to go faster, and has worse consequences when you mess up.

I completely understand and respect the guys who would take the 40k car vs the 25k car with 15k in mods but if it's up to me, I'd lean towards the 25k car with 15k in mods. My reasoning is that I can make the car how I want it within certain limits where if I spend the entire budget on the car then I'm stuck with what the factory provides.

Just my 2c.

I know what you mean, I guess it didn't read out like it did in my mind.
Either way stock C7 rated at 420hp so maybe a high 390ish wheel hp.
And a good modded out 86 can put down mid 300 whp. So hope that clears that up. Know what I'm saying, know what I mean?

The lt1 is rated at 455 hp and 460 ft lbs. with npp. They reliably put down over 400 of both stock. Usually 410 or so.

So your statement is still far off, and the twin would need a LOT of help to do what a stock C7 can. The torque defecit alone would be an incredible obstacle since I dont see a whole ton of twins hitting even too far over 300 ft lbs.

Here's one thing to consider...

Initial thoughts:

1) Weight - C7 is *heavy*. It weighs ~400 pounds more than a c5 z06, which leads to more money spent on consumables & a more insulated driver feel.
2) Luxury/Comfort - of course, C7 is the winner here (*especially* if you find one with MRC)
3) Parts cost - C7 likely costs more here, an engine is ~$10k I think.
4) Sound - C7 wins here
5) Steering feel - 86 would likely win here, but I haven't test drove a C7 yet
6) Reliability - could either be a wash or C7 would win if the supercharger ends up breaking things (likely)

What say you?
Every single person in this thread that has told you C7....wait for it....

Doesn't drive an 86....LOL (with the exception of DADHAWK and he even said the 86 is more fun on the streets).

Check out Pure Automotive's budget 2jz thread and look at the posts by the people who have told you C7 hands down. Im not saying they are trolls, but you might wanna see the things they've had to say about the 86...

Jaden

p.s. if you're talking about a used c7, so probably 2015... you can get a 2015 86 for between 12 and 15K so you have up to 28K in mods to get to a used c7's price.

Well, I try to base my comments on experience and reality. I definitely drive my vehicle, but I do have a BRZ and not an 86.
