Question for Porsche owners.
What is it like going from a car like a Subaru, Honda, Toyota to a Porsche?

Does it seem like once you step in it’s at another level of quality in all important aspects?

It's definitely a step up interior wise (981), and pretty much all around as a daily driver. But I think the 981 at least loses a lot of appeal when you start wanting to modify it. Even now the only thing you can really do with it is small things like a tune and headers/full exhaust, and by then your already 5-6k in the hole with only like 20-30 extra hp. But if your looking for something like a daily driver it'll definitely keep a smile on your face.

Modding for the sake of nodding? Yes. But your already starting out with a platform that is reconciled as one of the best in the world. A platform that others modify in attempt to equal. Nodding for power? Plenum, throttle body, headers, filters and tune.... easily 8-8 grand for 35ish hp. 10k for a turbo from TPC is really the only option but then you’re in the 500 hp range. Not too different a costbto the brz. You can mod it; but is is more expensive as well as a lot less necessary.

Going to a Porsche? There is nothing like it. It is solid and free of rattles and the interior noise that is there is because it was engineered to be. The car just feels incredibly solid yet has performance of exotics. Porsche has always punched outside of its weight class in terms of a spec sheet. Now before someone posts some lap times of a la Ferrari.... it’s not THE fastest but holds its own just fine against a number of exotics- no certainly not all. It is a very special brand. Again you can buy 3 or 4 twins for similar money when new and the twins are very good but the best German engineering trumps anything out of Japan.

See, now that's where your wrong, TPC never successfully finished their turbo for the 981 (says their done but you have to call for pricing???)and even then it's at 4psi on a already high compression motor that's not intercooled (and that only gets you around 400 no where near 500), and because of how hard it's been to tune the cayman it's a huge risk. Not just that there's also the issue of the gearing you have to deal with. As a platform for modding it's not worth it, your better off getting a 991 which is better at everything, unless you don't plan to mod and enjoy it as is. And what exotics is the cayman better than? 911 yes cayman not so much...

I have to apologize for getting anyone's hopes up. It was 2013 when I purchased the Clear Engine cover and R struts from Suncoast. The clear engine cover was 695.00 kit purchase. The Struts were $1595.00 actually. I see they have gone up, that's a shame. At the lower price I tried them out, in retrospect at the new price (and at the old price actually) I would choose a different setup with help in engineering the right strut, valving and spring rate. I eventually moved to JRZs, F****** awesome. But the PSS9s are damn popular, but I have no experience with them.

As for clear engine covers, there are still some out there. I sold my cover a year or so ago to a local PCA guy. I would look for a good used one for sale, again I am apologize for mis-leading you. I haven't shopped 987s on Suncoast in a while.

Looks like HIP Design still builds clear engines covers for the 987. $650.

I've been wanting a Cayman S for some while now. It seems like the most logical upgrade from the 86 chassis. I just can't fathom owning a car that could cause me a $20k repair bill (I'm not a lucky person).

I know I've only had my BRZ for a few months, but I'm already eyeing a Cayman S, Cayman GT4, or Corvette C7 once the BRZ crosses the threshold of full on track car. So one of those will have the fill the void of double duty daily/track car. Although....by that time I might be able to import a GC8 STI.

As far as family vehicles go...hopefully these gen2 Chevy 1500s start going down in price.

I couldn't justify switching the BRZ to a Cayman so, as consolation, I sold my Suzuki SX4 daily beater for a new 2017 V6 Mustang (final year of the V6). Haggled from 26k MSRP down to 19k (used 2015-2017s cost the same or more) or 21k OTD after tax/reg. V6 being the lightest, most balanced of the new Mustangs finally with independent rear suspension, it feels like a giant BRZ. Normal/Sport/Comfort steering settings make a difference and come standard whereas on the Cayman it's optional. In the sport rawness <-----> comfort spectrum, Cayman falls between the BRZ and Mustang. So I experience the contrast of two cars on different ends of that spectrum instead of one in the middle, I get a new car instead of used, and the difference I pay is less than switching from BRZ to Cayman.





Here's a sample of how I'd plot sports cars in that spectrum I mentioned:

Speaking of which, (this may warrant a new vs thread but hardly anyone has firsthand experience) the new Alpine A110 looks to be a closer competitor to the Cayman (maybe slots between a base and S) performance-wise but spiritually closer to the GT86 with its ~2500 lbs and 240hp. I feel like this reviewer referenced the GT86 more than the Cayman:

^^ That's actually not a bad idea. Mustang for comfort/DD + 86 for fun driving, with none of the maintenance of a Porsche.

I've been considering a similar combo as well (with a v8 instead).

I finally had the chance to drive a Cayman last week at Thermal in Palm Springs.

I believe it was a 2015, so that makes it a 981 I think. Power wise, the vehicle was stock but it had some sort of suspension modifications, along with upgraded brakes and wheels on R888Rs.



The car was awesome though. Very neutral at the limit and was willing to play. If it understeered, it came it very moderately and predictably. Same with oversteer. I had a few instances where the car would get some very nice rotation with some trail braking or on throttle on corner exit. But it was all very managable and predictable. Nothing aggressive or anything to take you by surprise.

I see why people love this car so much now. Power wise, the car felt fine, but I also think the gearing was a bit on the long side. I think slightly shorter gearing would have felt really nice. Other than that, I didn't have any real complaints.

I do wish it looked more like the GT4, since the normal S is a bit too bland for me, aesthetically speaking... but I'm still an 11 year old at heart when it coems to car styling sometimes lol.
