What I'd really like to see is the actual procedure to fix it. Has that been posted somewhere yet?

There was a post in one of the threads where a guy knew someone that is a tech at a dealer in Australia I think. He gave a quick rundown but no specifics because they haven't really released the details yet.

Cool. All the pressure's off. My wife is very happy that my contributions are no longer needed, and I was about to fold under the pressure anyway. Thanks! BTW... torque dip... ?

If I made it the way I usually do, you'd have to sit this one out, too.

Why would it be any different from ‘refer to service manual replace valve springs with updated part, reassemble to spec’?

Because from what I am hearing in this thread they plan to do it without removing the heads which is not what the manual wants you to do. The manual also doesn't want you to remove the cam caps before removing the cam subassemblies for risk of warping the heads. Perhaps they are trying to come up with an untorquing procedure that will allow them to remove the caps while the subassembly is still bolted to the head without warping. This would be a big time saver because you wouldn't have to clean up packing and reseal. Just think of how hard it would be to clean packing off a head and shit dropping down in there with no way to flush because you are trying to leave the head bolted to the engine.

Also, it's probably very doable without taking the cams off, one would just need an appropriate special tool to compress the lifter. If you can compress the lifter, you can take the shim out and it's very likely that once the shim is out you can take the rocker out from under the cam. Once that's out you've got a clear shot at the valve stem. Some compress air into the plug hole to hold the valve in while taking the spring out is all that's needed. |
