Are you a general contractor who gets hired by people who already own a lot to build their home on, or are you building homes on spec (basically a developer)?

I took some coursework in real estate finance so always interested when I hear people working in real estate related fields

I am really driven by time more than money. I wish I could find something that makes me the same or even 20-30% less than what I make right now but that is drastically less time than a 40+ hour workweek.

You can come to Canada our standard work week is 37.5 hours as long as it's not an American company then it's the same 40 hours. Some companies like large banks here would even let some of the staff leave work an hour early during the summer.

I don't think we get paid as well as south of the border in general tho, as we get taxed quite heavily here (it goes to public health care and such). Our things also costs more to buy on average.

Sure it is wonderful to dream about the perfect job for you and it is great to strive for it but for most those dream jobs will just never ever come around. Even when they do you may find that your dream job all of a sudden just turns into a job once you have it so you need to be careful what you ask for.
i'm in the labor sector, electrician.

i'm pretty happy with where i'm at. enough money for toys, but not enough to get me into serious trouble with the really big toys.

The millionaires have certainly removed personal risk, by using corps., and llc's. "Business owner" would have been a better term to use for part of that statement, in the hopeful climb to that multimillionaire status. I've seen them borrow against 401k's, 2nd and 3rd mortgages, etc. I've also seen them remove themselves from the payroll, so they could keep employees on, during slow periods. I can only speak from my experience though.

You could try shift work somewhere.. a lot of manufacturing places where I live do 12 hour shifts.. but you get half the week off so its pretty nice.

Interesting question OP, I'm really curious why do you ask? No one really asks that question these days, much less in a car forum. But it's a really good question if you want more out of life.

Actually in manufacturing (I can't speak to any other jobs) we are paid more than our US counterparts. Unfortunately a 37.5 work week is also almost unheard of. In most of the manufacturing the average work week is 44 and a 60 or even 70 hour week is not unheard of once you reach a supervisory or management position. Maybe the standard week is less in business office settings but I don't know anybody that works those hours. Hell, my wife works for a RV sales company and she works almost 50 hours a week for much of the year.

wouldn't everybody?
You can rule out most self employment if shorter hours are what you want.

That list I posted wasn't just a random bunch of labour jobs but a partial list of what I did in my climb to where I am now. I was very happy with my manufacturing job in automotive but wanted to get out of the business since it is so unstable. Found I was good in the EH&S realm so went to night school and at the age 31 got an entry level job doing EHS in... automotive manufacturing. So 30 years later I am still in the business that I originally trained and worked so hard to get out of. It took me about 10 of those years to get back up to the pay level that I was making when on the shop floor but now I am doing much better than I would be if still making parts

Well in the office setting at least at my company, on paper it says 37.5 hours per week but if they equip you with a laptop and crackberry (like I once was), then it becomes over 40 hours easy but with paid OT (I was on rotational on-call with standby pay). Once you hit a certain pay band (senior or management position and above), that OT will no longer be paid and you are expected to be reachable 24/7, most of them like you said would pull a 60 or 70 hour work week as they logon at home after hours. I've seen a lot of people at my company would quit management after some time and move back into a senior position due to stress.

Like some have mentioned before, the stress is not really due to the actual work involved, but from the people that need to be dealt with on a daily basis.
