you're asking the totally opposite sides of the spectrum, from a bike to a truck, what do you need to hear?

just get a civic or corolla if it is merely for a backup vehicle...last thing you want is your extra vehicle giving you a headache in the long run

Making up my mind is not really the main point of the thread.

Its more about posting your ideas of what your ideal second cheapo car would be. Or what you would pick out of the ones listed if it was you.

the ones I listed are my favorite picks for less than 5 grand or so.

More of a discussion than a decision time thread..

well you were asking for your specific needs of being less than $5 K so yea....we've had plenty of 2nd/3rd car threads on this forum

How far back can we go. This crowd seems to think that cars start in about 1990.

I have been shopping myself lately but a $5K max puts a damper on choices.

Seriously, if you are looking for a small, fun car to run around in, I'd suggest you look into an older Miata.

Yep, on those warm summer evenings, pop the top, jump in with your SO or kid and feel the warm Southern breeze blowing through your hair, while smelling the sweet smell of honeysuckle, magnolias and gardenias in the air.

Tcoat, I know you're a few years wiser than me, and as much as I did see a few Corvairs on the road years ago I wondered was the rear engine layout so great or is it just the rarity?

Wanting something reliable and with good AC usually doesn't let most sane people dip back further than the 80's.
