buying a 13 FR-S, need advice
so after months of searching i've decided on a 13 frs. it will be a 2nd car for me, my 4runner is my daily driver. the frs is for fun and an occasional semi practical other car. i want it for rallycross and SCCA track nights as well as a cute little car for dates and things like that. muddy rock sliders on my 4runner dont seem like a great idea if she has a dress on. anyway in a few hours im going to test drive one in seattle. im ready to put down $4000 as long as no major issues. it has 77k miles, 6spd manual, injen CAI, tein coilovers, equal length header, hi flow catback and enkei rpf1 wheels. however its $14,788. my friend told me kinda high, car gurus says good deal. any insight?
i think all i will do to it is a turbo kit, steel wheels for rallycross, maybe some extended wheel studs, and probably a brake kit. what should i know about this car? |

That is terribly high for the lowest spec, problem ridden (comparatively), already modded variant of this car you can get.
I would keep looking, do not let your anticipation for a cool new ride force you into a silly sale. I bought my 2013 FR-S in 2015 with a salvage title and 20k miles for 11k. Granted that it's not apples to apples, I wouldn't pay more than 10k for the car in FACTORY condition with a clean title now as you've described it. These cars end up seeing a lot by owners, and of all model years and trim options, the 2013 FR-S is your least favorable option. Not that it CAN'T be a great car, or WILL be unreliable, it's just that it has the most possible bad things. You're missing out on better coil packs, knee padding on the center console, a slightly improved valvetrain, 0% chance of the car falling under the most dangerous recall to hit this platform (valve spring recall, which would be better left alone, do not get this done), among various other small improvements. At the very least, if none of that deters you, he's asking 5k too much. Find a better example, please. EDIT: Also, no girl in a dress wants to get into this car, I promise |

If going for rally cross start off with a stock car and build appropriate to the class from the ground up. Don't try to make somebody else's build work for you.
A turbo will be of little value for your purposed use. By the time you spooled up you would be backing off again. Either stay NA or go SC for that immediate umph. Work out your suspension and wheels before even worrying about adding power anyway. Not like you are going to need more car until you learn how to use what is already there.

I mean, I guess a go-pro aimed up from the bottom of the passenger door wouldn't be too hard to implement Quote:
The only negation here is to walk away, I promise you that patience will reward you. On that note- when you gave a dollar figure- are you in America, or is there another currency you're using? Maybe it's a good deal and the currency you're speaking in is much different from how how I'm interpreting the amount you've given EDITL: NVM, you said you would participate in SCCA. Yeah please walk from this Last edited by DarkPira7e; 11-22-2020 at 11:05 AM. |

I believe it is still in America but can't be 100% positive without watching the news.

Yeah I just edited my post after re-reading. I just can't believe that someone is asking 14k for this car. Maybe in 40 years when Scion is valuable to that one old guy in Venezuela who collects trash from North America |

Since my FRS was high mileage yet unmolested and reasonably well maintained (it didn't have a recent oil change nor the brakes checked since selling it was a sudden decision in the spring when I would normally do those things) I put it up for sale on Facebook Market, Auto Trader and Kijiji for a very reasonable $10K. Got no response from Auto Trader. A couple of decently reasonable offers from Facebook. Kijiji was a shit show! Some actual quotes (and yes they were serious): "I will trade you even for a 98 Honda CVR. It has hardly any rust" "It is worth $3,000 tops but I will give you $4,000" "I really want this car but have no money. Can I pay you $100 a month" "$5K first and only offer. If you don't take this you are a stupid, stupid kid and deserve to get screwed" This guy called back about 6 times trying to convince me I was a fool for not taking his super offer. Eventually I got a firm offer for $8,000 that I was happy with but then sold it to a guy that was hooked up through the forum for $7,500 because I felt he would give it a better home. The funny part is that they have actually gone UP in value slightly since then!

ill probably only rallycross a few times a year, same with tracknights which will probably be even less. i want 4 seats i might drive this to work once a week or so. my 4runner isn't so great on gas, will be worse once supercharger is installed. i have a 10 year old, what if i take her along to a dinner or something. also supercharger for 4runner is coming next month so i wont have to rent a car.
