Am I the only one around here that's a little disappointed to see motorsports turning into a giant fuel economy circle jerk?

Like with the Formula E crap and the aim being to reduce displacement and add electric hybrid crap? ...

I don't know, it kind of makes me like the sport less when it's not as focused on raw power / making the best I.C. engine you can. Sure you can argue that "well by putting restraints on the engine size they're forcing them to be more innovative" ... but it really scares me with the way the auto industry is heading. I'm only 23 and I'm already becoming a leadite

I think the changes are exciting and present some great challenges for the teams to tackle.

The point is to stay relevant to the actual car market.

Renault, Honda, and in a lesser way, Mercedes are not interested in showing off to the world (and particularly emerging markets) how good they are at making V8s. They wanna show off how you could have their F1 tech sitting in your driveway.

yes, because you are a caveman and fail to see the end goal of it all.

I guess I just liked it more when there wasn't so much focus on fuel economy.

Yeah, we're running out of oil. Have to face the facts. It's still kinda lame. I mean look at the next gen NSX for christ sake.

in a mutli-lap racing environment fueling is always a top focus

they just don't talk about it as much because fuel strategy isn't shiny and doesn't make any loud, exciting noises

Yeah i'm familiar with the fuel strategy, and as a component of the sport I agree it's pretty interesting / adds dimension.

The engines look a bit different than the ones in those pictures because the engines need wastegates so the engines in practice, in the cars, have wastegates as well.

@rice_classic: I always assume what's being shown is for illustrative purposes only and not a perfect replication of what's going on under those finely sculpted lines.

Indeed. Renault showcased the display engine but when testing it and also eventually adapting it to the cars it was realized that a waste gate is necessary part of the equation. Probably this was realized even before the display engine was put forth but nonetheless the display was sans WG.

There's some prominent F1 bloggers talking about computer management and Fuel consumption rate concerns on all cars there exists a real possibility that no cars actually finish the first Grand Prix. Now wouldn't that be something!

@Guillaume: Nope, but I do enjoy Easter eggs if Renault is so inclined.
