Exclamation FT-86 to debut new Toyota GPS-track day technology

Check out this bit of cool info:

Quote:
On display at the Toyota stand at this year's Tokyo Auto Salon will be the Toyota FT-86 G's Sports, which boasts an even sharper exterior and a world-first "GPS-track day" unit co-developed with the creators of the Gran Turismo franchise and automotive technology giant Denso. So what's so special about the unit, you ask? From what we've learned, you will be able to drive your real FT-86 around a real track -- the Nurburgring, for example -- and then remove the memory card from your car, plug it into your PS3 unit and either "watch" your lap virtually or race against yourself, as your real car appears as the "ghost car" that you battle against.

The GPS unit was tested in a fully race-prepped Lexus IS F at the Nurburgring last October. If you look closely at the FT-86's dashboard in previous press photos, you will see an outline of Fuji Speedway, a lap timer and an altimeter -- which hints at where Toyota is going with this technology.

Word from inside Toyota is that they plan to roll out the technology on "most" future models, with the first of course being the FT-86 in late 2012. Also, as has been previously reported, the Gran Turismo developers are also working on launching a 3D version of GT5 as soon as 3D TVs become available on the market. We've taken a quick demo spin of the 3D version, which looks fantastic in early builds. Of course, that assumes GT5 will ever be finished. Latest intel we have is late summer of this year at the earliest.

Crazy how accurate it is, there are going to be some major advancements in the use of car telemetry. This could be seriously useful for teams to practice if they can’t do a lot of testing and if GT5’s physics are accurate enough. Maybe people could start setting up cars virtually then running them in real life...

kind of a useless feature, especially when the person doesn't play GT5.

Would of been better to have digital gauges like the GTR has

I agree the GTR's digital gauges are amazing, but digital gauges would have been way too expensive to put into a car in the FT86's price range I think.

What's important to me is that this shows Toyota obviously wants and expects this car to be tracked!!

GT5 isn't the only use for the technology. they imply as much right there in the article.

but since i do play GT5 (well, i will when it ever finally comes out), that might be kinda fun.

I really dont think this will make it into the car as a standard feature, and besides, Id rather some other performance upgrade from the factory then some kind of map that means nothing to me since I do not play GT5 or even own a PS3

Fuck, if you don't like it, don't buy it. Toyota usually makes you pay for everything, so it will likely be an option rather than standard.

I for one think it's a great and innovative feature, and takes Nissan's gps based speed limiter one step further. A lot can be one with this technology, think outside the box people.

Hopefully it will be an option and I wont have to buy it! Give me an LSD standard instead! (or a BBK)

THERE ARE MORE USES THAN JUST THE PS3/GT5.

yes, i'm sure there are more useful things they could add into the car, but this isn't purely a GT5 feature.

wow thats pretty cool, very accurate... question? you know how some race track they have several track configurations, (example the California speed way) half of the inside track, full inside track and oval will that register on the psp?

Agreed.
I really like the idea of this.. but damn, I'd hate to lose to myself.

Edit: Self-defeating, I think, is the term..
