OK, I've done a little more research. The STI bar has a ball joint (or ball and socket?) in the middle. As such, like a hinged design (cusco, beatrush, others like that), strut towers can still move in the vertical direction (read: moving with the shock to somewhat "absorb" a bump). They offer about the same stiffness and rigidity in the horizontal directions (struts moving towards each other). However, the hinged designs can allow a little more angular motion (along the hinge).

Rigid bars don't have that vertical movement. They are a little more "race" oriented, if that helps to describe it, since they tie the struts together even more (but still not as much as a sway bar). They are slightly more effective, but they debatably will give a harsher ride.

Our cars have a stiff chassis to begin with, so any gain is minimal, really. Some conditions/instances allow the strut bars to be felt, but most don't.

FT-86 Speedfactory, GTSpec, Hotchkins, and I think Password JDM offer rigid bars. Personally, I have the FT86 speedfactory bar. My beliefs are that these bars complement tires and suspension mods. On their own, they don't do much. Stock, or on all seasons, there will be more body roll, and the tires will have more "give" (sidewall flex, less grip), so that rolling and sliding effect will mask the bar.

Disclaimer: I'm not studying dynamic systems. That's not my area of expertise. I've only studied static systems and deal more with ergonomics, physiology, and manufacturing systems. lol. I'm just basing it off of what I have read in the past, personal experience, and common sense from physics. This isn't an entirely correct answer, but it should at least give you a better idea.

i didnt think they would make much of a difference either... but i put front and rear strut bars on my brz and its night and day. i have the Megan bars (not expensive but they get the job done). you can really feel a big difference. and my car is on 17x8 rims with 245-45-17 tires (bigger side wall) with a stock suspension. i agree that a hinged design is less effective but these are hinged and they work very well.
