Thanks. They are requiring some really old style skills that only 60+ year olds have (cobol, mainframes, etc) but I'll look into it.

What type of Linux experience do you have? We are looking for someone pretty technical when it comes to bash and vi scripting. Pays quite a bit more than your previous job.

LOL, maybe I should get my mom to apply for it then ;-)

At least it's good weather for being laid off - enjoy it while it lasts!

Hey, I like emacs and Linux, Python and awk, been doing high performance computing for ~ 15 years. Any chance you might be interested in that? (I'd have to brush up on vi, but maybe my mom could help)

@stockysnail

That is basically what we are looking for. I am interviewing a guy today and a guy on Thursday. Here is the Requisition Number - 1117068 - Technology Consultant IV. Go to HP.com/careers to submit an application

It is in Houston though so if we liked you it would be for a position that would be here. The pay is quite competitive and the minimum would be more than you are asking.

I thought you were the stockysnail guy at first. If you are making 50k now the pay increase over that would make it very worth your while if you qualified.

I've only used Unix to login to Vi for a year in college, so I basically have no experience with Unix/Linux nor with bash and vi scripting. I'll look at the careers page anyway though. I worked at HP testing inkjet printers for a year as a contractor, which was one of the most boring jobs I've ever had. Printers aren't very exciting. One reason I'd rather work more with people and manage them, but I'm stuck in a catch 22 on that. No formal managerial experience means no manager jobs.

GL with your job search. Funny thing about using mainframe, I still use it at work every day. I thought it was funny that you brought that up as being archaic, as my father just took a job with a local company to where their main systems are run off mainframe and some of the older tech bits. They had the posting listed for 3 months before he applied and we found out afterwards taht he was the only one that applied for the position.

I'll join the laid off thread, I got laid off in January and have been looking since, history in IT Support, system administration, and network engineering. Fortunately like Ducatichick said, it is great weather for it and Im using the time off to pursue some certifications.

Maybe the old mainframe stuff works well, you know, it hasn't been "upgraded".
