Show up with a price in mind and offer that price.

Or you could just buy mine: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=118632

Tip #1 is get Costco pricing. They'll send you to a dealer that will give you their "special" pricing (it was 500 under invoice for me). You can then choose to go with them, or simply use that to negotiate with your preferred dealer. I did that, and they were happy to give me the car for that price.

There are probably other ways to get that or similar pricing, but this is simply the easy way I did it. In all I'd say you'd be making a mistake to pay over invoice for the car.

EDIT: Ok, totally didn't properly read your post. USED CAR. Got it. In any case, using online tools to know the price you would like to pay will help (such as the Edmunds TMV calculator, or KBB). Once you know the price you want to pay, I'd knock a certain percentage off of that for negotiating room (~10%?). This is all assuming the car has a clean history (look that up, too). Also, I didn't see the mileage listed on the ad--you'll need to know that to determine what it's worth, so call them and get the mileage if you don't already have it. Lastly, as far as actual negotiating, let them know the price you'd like and don't be apologetic for it. If they don't like it, they'll counter offer, and then you can counter offer, take their price, or walk. Plenty of these things floating around, so you don't have to be super-eager. Also, remember that you're negotiating on the total car price, not financing, not monthly payment, just the TOTAL PRICE. Let them know that you can talk about financing after you've agreed on a price.

Hope this helps!

To echo Tcoat here... whats wrong with the WRX, if you got schooled on the car just last year and have been making payments on it for only a year or less... are you upside down on the WRX? Problably not considering you have $7-8K in hand for a down payment.... You are going to do what you want, but I'd say drive the wrx a little longer...

That was a right car, right place, right time situation though.

I bought the WRX with cash in hand. And when I fix something 2 other things break..... Spends more time at a shop than on the road, so I would like something more reliable and I figured I can afford a BRZ considering I have around 10 grand saved up

Also, what is the mileage? I took it up the rump 4K miles after I bought my car when I was told I needed a 30K inspect that rung up to $330.

I think the next expensive one is at 45K, then 60K. Obviously you can probably get by without (not sure the impact on the warranty) because some of the stuff they check seems like overkill if you aren't tracking the car, but you may want the service records to try and negotiate the next closest inspection off the price.
The mileage is 20kish and I will definitely bring my dad for his experience

Perfect answer! So no loan and a valid reason for changing. Will you trade it or sell privately?

Just to clarify, he means the car you drove to the dealership in; not the car you want to be yours.

Sell privately for sure, a trade is is around $3500-4000 and thats not what I want for it.

I would love $6500 but would be content with $5500-6000 and if I can't manage to sell it, I'll keep it as a project car and build it up slowly
