Any tips on negotiating the price on my soon to be BRZ?

What's up guys so I will be purchasing a 2014 BRZ limited
soon... Here's the link https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/l-Used...ting=172261834

When I was 18 I bought an 04 wrx and I got too excited pulled the trigger and I got absolutely schooled by a shady salesman, so I really dont want to get schooled again considering I'm only 19 now.

What methods can I use to negotiate a better price, and how low should I aim for? I already took it for a test drive, and the car is in fantastic shape, and the salesman seems very friendly and helpful.

If it helps I plan to put a 7000-8000 dollar downpayment on it, and my dad will cosign so that I dont get raped by interest, because I'm just starting to build my credit.

Thanks in advance

I reckon no matter what price you negotiate, you will always think you could have gotten a better "deal". So, just pay a reasonable price and enjoy the car.

Oh, yes, bringing in your own financing is a good thing to do.

Also, just pass up on any "extras" the dealer may wish to sell you.

Do your homework before walking into the dealer. Use sites like truecar, Edmunds to determine your "acceptable" price but never tell that to your salesman no matter how hard he tries to ask you.

Don't be afraid to walk. Calmly stand up, shake their hand, and walk to your car. Once you are in your car take a good few minutes to breathe before leaving. Most of the time they will run out and stop you, and failing that they might just call you the next day and say they are willing to make a deal. Don't expect anything though unless you have done your homework. Print out truecar receipts, print out other dealer inventories, have a price in mind before you start talking and make it clear. When I got my 17 BRZ PP I, up front, told them what price I was willing to pay monthly and whatever they needed to do to get to that would be what we are negotiating.

Unless you actually want them and can get them for free.

The absolute worst way of negotiating. This is what dealers love to hear, when they hear this the slot machine noises start going off in the finance office.

Exactly. Negotiate out the door price, not payments. Arrange your own financing as a backup. Be realistic.

When I bought my brz I emailed the dealer with what I wanted to pay for the car including what I wanted for my trade. My offer was fairly aggressive but reasonable. They replied they couldn't do that and gave me a price that was $600 more out the door. I called them and asked to split the difference and I'll pick it up tomorrow, they agreed.

If you make a reasonable offer in a respectful manner most salespeople are willing to work with you. Just be realistic. These cars don't stay on the lot for long and demand is still high. Mine arrived 2 days before I picked it up.

What happened to the 04? If that was just last year and you got beat up on it then why are you changing now? Changing cars every year is a bad habit to get into and can cost you a fortune.

I was going to say don't a buy a brand new car, but reread your post it is used so good job on that!

Usually used cars there's more wiggle room, don't feel like this is the only option even though you really wanted it. (even if you really like color, transmission, milage, mods)

Don't buy it on the spot, actually walk out. I walked out one time, and they didn't say anything while i was leaving. Next thing you know i recieve a phone call to come back and knocked like additional $800 what they lowest offer was. Sometimes they really test you.

Since your dad will co-sign, I'd definitely bring him. I think that two people (one older) will tip things in your favor, especially if your dad is the one saying "why do you need this?"

While the dealer is saying "think about how cool you will look. Let me take a photo and send it to you!"

Also, what is the mileage? I took it up the rump 4K miles after I bought my car when I was told I needed a 30K inspect that rung up to $330.

I think the next expensive one is at 45K, then 60K. Obviously you can probably get by without (not sure the impact on the warranty) because some of the stuff they check seems like overkill if you aren't tracking the car, but you may want the service records to try and negotiate the next closest inspection off the price.
