Sooo... your purpose in life is to do whatever makes you happy? I know you have no reason to trust or believe me, since we don't know each other at all, but, well.. please, trust me. If you live your life like that, you'll be miserable in the long run. Happiness is a lot things to a lot of people, and most folk's definition of happiness evolves a great deal as they age. Some confuse happiness with enjoyment. I may not enjoy a lot of the things I do to help out other people, but when I lay my head down at night, there's a smile on my face, peace in my heart, and I sleep well. When I've spent the day serving my own wants for my own enjoyment, well... that inner peaceful feeling is harder to find.

I'm not saying that there's NO point in doing things that please you, but rather that putting yourself above others will not bring you happiness. It just won't. Take care of yourself so you can take care of others.. sure. Please yourself, then please others... nope.

To the original poster... an 86 would be a great complementary vehicle to the CX-5. Like T, my wife prefers big heavy SUVs. I'm not a big fan (although I loved the '93 Range Rover we had.. just didn't love working on it all the time), but she feels safe in them in the winter. She's got a 2006 ML500 now (purchased two years ago, then put in a new tranny, control modules, and in general enough money to buy another car.. sigh.. but she loves it), and when that goes, I'll get her anything else she wants that we can afford. I don't like to spend money, but I do like to drive, and my '13 FR-S was a great compromise. She loved my previous car ('93 325i), but the salt in our area eventually ate it. She likes riding in the FR-S (manual, and she drives manual pretty well... taught her how in a Ford E150 van and a Fiat spider back in the early 80s, and all of my cars have been manual), but driving it was an acquired taste for her; she hated it at first but has slowly come around. This pair of vehicles (ML500/FR-S) has firmly become a her car/my car set, whereas in the past we've always just shared the vehicles and switched off constantly. If I need to haul a TON of stuff or really big stuff, I steal her ML and she drives the FR-S w/out complaint. As long as you don't envision a time when you'll NEED your wife's CX-5 AND she'll need to drive something else at the same time, I can't think of a single reason NOT to get the 86. It's a great, fun, reliable, cheap-to-drive car.

Pretty rare find there.. good catch! Mine learned out of necessity (unreliable AT car, reliable four-on-the-floor E150 van) but hated it, then out of desire (Fiat spider). To this day, while she's great with the clutch, she still doesn't really listen to the engine or "feel" the car when it's working too hard so she ends up in ... ahem.. inappropriate gears at times, and doesn't really understand that there's no real formula like "if you're doing 40 mph, you should always be in 4th gear." She's a by-the-numbers gal ... and not real keen on helpful suggestions when she's in the wrong gear, no matter how I nicely I make them. Most of the time, she does great. When she doesn't, at this point, I just eat it. The car'll handle whatever she dishes out, and it ain't worth the friction. After 38 years together, a little tiny bit of strain on the car once in a while ain't near as important to me as avoiding a little tiny bit o' strain on her feelings.

She refuses to even ride in my car! It is too low, loud and bumpy and she is afraid it will get run over by a truck. But she had zero objection when I bought it since there is never any need for her to drive it.
In fact we did a much greater compromise when she just got her new car. Since I drive whenever we are going someplace I wanted certain things that she would never want or use. She wanted another SUV and I wanted something that didn't handle like a bloody tank so we shopped around managed to find something we both enjoy driving. Was a win for everybody.
Mind sharing what you got? Same issue with my SO, she likes SUV's (thankfully small ones) but I can't stand the whole concept of them...

Alrighty fellas, I ended up getting a car. I got a WRB PP. They made me a deal that turned it for me. I drove out for $26,681 +ttl and they threw in ceramic tint. Hopefully I don't run in to a situation that calls for my wife to drive my car. She was 100% on board with the deal and said she would try to learn stick but gave no promises.

Perfect! See you didn't need this thread after all. Just the right deal to swing you over.

Oh sorry I guess that piece of info was sort of critical to the story!

2017 Impreza hatch. Fully loaded. Almost as much space as her Outlander Sport (RVR) had inside but with a center of gravity lower than a 20 story building and handling almost as good as the FRS/BRZ/86. It is a perfect gem for the family grocery getter.

I will be doing a review in the other vehicles sub after I get a bit more seat time. So far extremely impressed.

Slightly off topic but I never for the life of me understood why married people, usually men but not always, allow someone to tell them what to do or grant permission like they are a little child going to the ice cream truck. Its not like they are paying? Provided your not doing something outlandish and your family is well cared for I would not tolerate that. I am single mind you.. so let that speak for itself.

You'll understand when you find someone who makes you happier than getting your way all the time.

You seem to make the mistake of thinking us married guys aren't able to do what we want without permission. Not true. We just pick and choose what to stand firm on.

You'll probably die soon anyways. Might as well have a nice car.

That's how I see it.

I was about to say something similar.
