Thumbs down Toyota Echo MT Nightmare!

I know this isn't exactly the right place, but I cannot find an answer for the life of me!!
I bought a 02 echo with a MT. Ad stated it needed a new trans, that a clutch was put in about 6 months ago...
Jacked up the front, started, put in gear, wheels turn, seems fine?
Road test: Start in 1st gear, everything seems fine. Shift to second, going about 20mph... SCREEEEEEECH. Both front wheels lock up like you tried your best to put the brake pedal through the floor!!!! Engine stayed alive as I pressed in the clutch asap... Tried to move in 1st, wheels are locked.
Friend with a truck pulls the car a few feet... Car is free to move now, but does the same thing again in 1st gear SCREEEECH.
I'm assuming this is a catastrophic transmission failure? Thing is, I can't find anyone, with any kind of car via google that this has ever happened to.
It's relatively hard to source a reasonable priced echo MT.
So... Before I go buying a new trans, any suggestions? Input? Comments, smart remarks? Thanks for the help!!!

Find another trans or another car.
The trans is toast.

Well, nothing more I can say than it's the tranny.
Pretty much the only way to know for sure is to take out the tranny and open her up. At that point your pretty much halfway done.

Boneyard transmission for an Echo can't be that expensive..?

EDIT: curiosity got the best of me so I did a little searching and it looks like $500 is an average price for a used transmission. Hope you have tools.

Welcome to ...... The Forum......

Yep, it does sound like your transmission is messed up.

I figure the cost of a transmission plus labor to install it, would be more than the car is worth.

I'd suggest you give it away or junk it.

Time to let er go.

Check your local scrap yards and be prepared to put some elbow grease into it if you don't want to pay a fortune in labour.

Engine swap a 2.0L boxer engine and matching transmission into it. You can probably find someone around here to sell you one.

The echo and the early Tercels used the same trans. With that, you could probably use your echo trans bellhousing and bolt it to a c56 which should be more plentiful. Not sure on axles or the far upper trans mount. I say probably because I've done the other way in using a C56 bellhousing to the tercel trans to put a 1zz into a tercel. Beer and boredom make dumb things happen.

don't forget the Yaris. Transmissions are plentiful. $400-$500 seems to be the range, same for the engine as well.

op should check yarisworld. It is a shell of its former self, but there are still some good people that check in every so often.

Have you double checked the clutch install? I doubt that would be it after your description but I had a vehicle before that would lock the clutch up after it got hot and you could break it free forcefully or let it cool down. Cold and in neutral it would roll back and forth without issue.

Thanks for all of the posts guys! Posted in an echo forum somewhere and got crickets!! I've been a mechanic most of my life, bought the car for $100 with intentions of flipping it.
Does anyone know for sure if I can just take any c150 trans (Yaris, paseo, Tercel etc) and swap the bell housing? Are the axle splines going to be the same? I've found a pulled, tested and good echo trans for around $420 shipped but there are plenty of Tercels and a few paseos maybe one Yaris in a local yard... Thanks again guys!!
