12V Power for Rear Camera
I'm currently trying to install a reverse camera right above the license plate, but I'm not sure where I can get the 12 V wire soldered onto.
I was contemplating the license plate lights .. but those didn't seem to turn on when I turned my engine on. Unfortunately, the 12v Red and Black wires looks a little short .. so I'm not sure if I can wire it all the way back into the rear to connect to the reverse light power source. (I have connected the 12v pink reverse wire near the driver's foot well to the head unit to trigger the manual override on the head unit) Can anybody help me out and shed some insight as to where I can connect this 12v power wire to? Thanks guy! PS: I am contemplating connecting the power source from the lights for the license plates .. but I'm not sure if they are 12V and whether they are on 100% of the time the car is one. Does anybody know?

Just installed this the other day. Added an extra wire and wired it up with the reverse lights. I believe its the green wire behind the plastic piece.

But I'm wondering if I can just do the license plate lights because they're so close to the short 12v red/black wires.

License plate lights won't work as that wire doesn't have 12v until parking lights are on. During daytime, you won't have a camera.
Typical installations are intended to use the reverse lamp wire to power the camera for 2 reasons, it's always on when in reverse, and when you aren't in reverse the camera is off thus extending its life. Most kits include a video cable that has a red wire inside it to run off the trigger source at the headunit. Make sure yours doesn't have that, it will save you tons of trouble if it does. Only other viable alternative is to run off the trunk interior light's wire, but as stated that's not recommended. |
