The GT86, which is a blended successor of the AE86's design principles with the 2000GT's body lines, is not called the AE86 or a 2000GT because it isn't a pure successor of either, nor is it at minimum, a variation of a Corolla like how the AE86 was, right?

Likewise, this next Toyota sports car may not be called a Supra because it may be a combination of principles and components that are neither purely Supra, purely a BMW, or purely some other Toyota model like the LF-LC or LC500 (if it those powertrains that grace this new car). I'm sure it will be a great car because Toyota knows what they are doing like you said, but then again, it may not be a Supra successor, and some people were hoping for that.

It could be a new car that is even smaller than the old car with fragile components that don't lend themselves to tuning, or especially big horsepower (like the 86). It may lose the straight six in favor of a Lexus engine variant, meaning like the new Cayman, it may perform better, but lose a little of that Supra straight six sound and feel, like how the Cayman lost the flat six sound and feel.

I think if they want to call the next car a Supra then it should have some Supra qualities: front engine turbo straight six with decent power; RWD only (not hybrid); feel as wide and planted as the MKIV was or better; handle as good as the MKIV did or better; have an engine that is built to support tuning; come with a manual option that isn't some glass transmission; have hips with a long hood and be a hatchback; and have that cockpit-style, driving position.

So to recap, in short, I totally agree the next car will have Toyota DNA in it and be great, and it is safe to speculate that it will probably have some Supra DNA, but it is also worth speculating that it may not have all Supra DNA and be a pure successor, whether it shares the Supra name or not.

Guff the Supra WAS 3000GT it even says that on the JDM random white school kid video.

And the black prototype was actually the chopped up Impreza, the white one was the chopped up Legacy.

Okay now time to drive to work on my Toyota.

Its cool. I never made that connection either. But we both drive a Scion Front Rear-Sport, so we have always been at a disadvantage.

Is it just me, or is this car getting progressively uglier?

Calty did too good of a job with the FT-1. I think the new Lexus LC and LS are pretty impressive in how close the production models are to the concepts.

Also I think BMW had too much say into the design of this interior. It's not as Toyota as the BRZ.

Yeah, I'm sure the car will look better in person. All these modern designs look terrible in 2D, but are very intriguing in person.

I guess I'm more confused about what's going on with the front bumper now.

I was really hoping the dash would be very driver oriented, the rendering shown looks pretty bland unfortunately.

I guess... Maybe? Toyota, while getting better at design, still tends to fall short. I dunno if another company could have better translated the FT-1 to production, but obviously that is to much for Toyota, either because of manufacturing limitations or otherwise.

Would anyone else agree these latest renders are probably 95%+ accurate?

Some of the details could still be wrong, but overall this has to be it, right?

For me, it is exactly what I expected, for the most part. See the Jalopnik render from last year. Obviously a lot of people wanted to dismiss that render in favor of the FT-1 inspired renders, despite spy photos that lacked any indication of those design elements. Of course, the Jalopnik render did turn out to be inaccurate in many ways, but as we see, it was a pretty solid indicator of what the final product is likely to be, unless these renders turn out to be total bunk.

Tokyo can't get here soon enough.
