It's my 2nd new car. The mental process of understanding it's a piece of material that is meant to be used is very important. My uncle is a prime example of someone that stores his cars in garages and does not enjoy them whatsoever. He has a '73 Z28, '81 Jeep CJ5, '13 1500 Silverado HD, and an '04 Buick Regal SC all with a combined total of less than 100k miles. It's actually quite sad because it would ruin his day(s) if something happened to them. So he rather not risk it and let them sit. He had an '86 Buick Grand National and '00 Z28 that he sold because they just sat around in the garage. He couldn't stand letting them get dirty, rock chipped, or God forbid door dinged. The '00 Z28 still had the plastic over the carpet. Give me a break!
I will be in my 3rd car in the next 5 years if I am blessed to live longer on this beautiful Earth. And that car too will be driven and enjoyed daily. Driving a car is like Heaven on Earth for me :-) |

Nothing I have owned has ever been, "just a car", they are my cars. I'll enjoy them, and if something happens while I'm enjoying them, so be it. But I'm still going to park away from others, and do what I can to prevent idiots from damaging what I paid good money for.

"It's what non-car people don't get. They see all cars as just ton-and-a-half, two-tons of wires, glass, metal, and rubber. That's all they see. People like you or I know, we have an unshakable belief that cars are living entities. You can develop a relationship with a car. And that's what non-car people don't get." I'm not saying people who think their car is just a car are not car people. We're all on this forum for the love of this platform. I put the part in bold in which I feel about my 86, along with the other vehicles I've owned over the course of my life. If I destroy my car doing what I love doing, I'm fine with that. I drive my 86 the way it was meant to be driven. I'll continue to park away from the crowd of "non-car people" and still have fun. |

I think the idea I was trying to convey is that people BABY this car. Hell, I babied the car. It needs to be abused a little! ESPECIALLY a car that is as much fun as this. I'm not going to go out looking for an accident, but not worrying about the little imperfections will have me injoy the car a LOT more I think |

Do you think they will get it right this time? I presume that's why it is out of your hands. To get it repainted...?

I quit pampering my car when I moved to downtown LA where I would scrape even with stock height. I stopped caring completely when I went up to glendora mountain road on a rainy day and hit some of the landslide debris which scratched my front bumper (lucky it could have been much worse). All i care about is that interior stays clean, mechanicals in good working order, and that the exterior has sealant. My car is usually the dirtiest out of all twins I see on the road. My paradigm for this car is that I am its commander, not its butler.

After about 3 weeks of ownership when I started shopping around for a clear bra. I wasn't going to settle for partial coverage of the hood and the front fenders because it looks worse.
So the clear bra was in the range of 1500-2000 for all the parts I wanted covered, and it's not worth spending 5% the cost of the car again just to protect the paint, and extend the paint life a few years. |

It's my daily driver. I knew from the beginning that it was going to get beat up, like all DDs do. I don't sweat the scratches and rock chips (there are plenty now), I just enjoy the ride.

I agree with the OP, while I do like to keep it clean, I don't obsessively wax it. I still do park away from others because door dings piss me off, just because the lack of respect that other people don't have for property that isn't theirs. But on road trips I don't tape up the front end, she's covered in chips, the front bumper has almost zero paint on the underside from being lowered. And if the paint starts to fade (red) or the clear wants to oxidize I probably wont care too much. So long as she's mechanically sound and the body is relatively straight that's all I want!
Edit: oh and I like to beat on her from time to time like she was designed Last edited by VacantSky; 06-17-2014 at 05:16 PM. |
