Lock out shifting from 3rd to Second when cold
Hi all,
I know there is a first gear lock out but I experience a lock out shifting from 3rd to Second when the car is cold. I will need to wait until the car speed is under 10kmph before it will let me engage second from third when cold. As it warms up the speed at which it lets me engage second goes up. For example after say 5mins, I can engage second at 20kmph. Once it is fully warmed up, there is no issue going into second. Is this normal or do I have a tranny issue? Thanks! |

How best to then deal with the lockout of second gear when cold? I either have to slow down to under 10kmph to change into second or keep it in 3rd gear at low car speeds of around 10-20kmph. Second option is not good for the transmission right?

What fluid and how old?
I've tried a couple different kinds and some work better/worse when cold. |

It is a 2020 model. Not sure exactly what transmission fluid, but it would be whatever Toyota uses since it is serviced by the dealer.

I have tried rev matching with mixed success. When I set off in a rather cold morning, rev matching doesn't seem to work straight away. Is there a better oil i should use?

Pretty much any high quality, modern, synthetic gearbox lube, not the OE GL-3 stuff.
I can only vouch for Amsoil MTG, other will speak for Motul Gear 300LS, Redline MT90... Take your pick. |

I don't recommend the Motul in colder climates, I think it is hard to get right now anyway. I didn't have good luck with it. Redline MT90 from the parts store works great.

Exact opposite for me with Redline MT90 - works poorly in cold. I also never had an issue with the OEM fluid. Gonna try Amsoil next.

AMSOIL did the trick for me. I could start the vehicle in the cold mornings and drive right away without having to drive extremely conservatively or letting the car warm up for a few minutes.

Interesting, I have run it down to in the teens F and it's been good for me.

How cold does it get in Sydney? I'd think any fluid would be fine there. Don't overthink it and just double clutch into 2nd, OP. These transmissions are all cranky when it's cold out. It's just how they are.

There is no such thing as second gear lockout.
