As far as American cinder blocks vs Chinese jack stands goes, I think I'm leaning towards the jack stands. If it doesn't go high enough maybe I can put the jack stands on solid concrete blocks. I don't know. We'll see how it goes.
I don't need to be in a hurry, I still have my GTI and it's still a lot of fun to drive.

Solid blocks or good heavy chunks of wood are a far better choice.
Mine blew 45 minutes away fro the dealer and I drove it there anyway. Can confirm that clutch-less shifts are indeed possible. Was an interesting drive.

I was thinking about jacking the car up and putting it on cinder blocks. Then put the jack on cinder blocks and jack it up some more and add cinder blocks until it's high enough to comfortably work under. But.........

Dude. Take a trip to Harbor Frieght, look for those tall SUV jack stands. Those are great I used those with zero problems on 5 engine swaps to date. Also a tranny jack is a god send.

This came with the kit.
Can anyone confirm that the Exedy TOB is a POS? I think I heard somewhere that the OEM clutch is an Exedy.

Cinder blocks, bricks, etc. are a huge no-no. Never get underneath anything supported by them. You never know when they will fail.

Also, remember to support the engine to keep it from flopping forward when the transmission is separated from it. Otherwise, it will be a nightmare trying to get it back together.

I have seriously considered buying one and keeping it in the glove box, so, if I'm out in the bush somewhere and the TOB goes bad, I'll have the right one for the local Bubba to just pop in there.

I just looked up the DIY for clutch replacement and the pictures are gone! It says something about 3rd party hosting has been temporarily disabled. Something to do with Photobucket. Whatever that is.
What does this mean? Are the pictures gone forever or are they being held ransom by some third party?
I was really hoping to use the DIY as a guide but it will be a lot more difficult without the pictures.

Photobucket is the service and indeed they are now expecting to get paid so most pictures are gone.

You know, what you say makes a lot of sense. But if I go to the Subaru dealer and get a new one, how can I tell that it's the latest and greatest? How do I know if the one I have isn't the new one?
The way I look at it, the one that just blew was definitely the old version because the car was built in 2012. And they didn't know there was a problem at the time. And it lasted for 129,000 miles.
So I think I'll just roll the dice and take my chances with the one I have. When it does blow, at least I'll know what I'm up against to replace it. Plus when it blows it will probably time to replace the clutch anyway.

Make sure it is part #SU003-07349. That is the upgraded one.

The main reason why these are going bad on earlier models isn't the part, per se, but the grease that was used. It doesn't withstand the heat it endures, so it breaks down over time and results in the TOB going out. I don't know what other changes were made to the new TOB, but I do know the grease was changed to a more heat-resistant one. There's no guarantee that the TOB that comes in the Exedy kits has this. By not spending the $40 on the updated part, you run the risk of this happening all over again later down the road.

Tcoat has referenced the new part. There's a Subaru branded one and a Toyota, but they're really the same thing. I would go with the proper brand just to be on the safe side if a warranty claim should arise in the future.
