^ +1 What he said...fuel pump is lubricated with the fuel itself to cool down.

Speaking of fuel, how many of you guys actually used 93 octane? I'm kinda debating if I should use 91 or 93 when the time comes...

I use 93. The difference is only $1-$2 per tank. Seems like mighty cheap insurance to keep the car running at peak form.

Look at it this way, packing a lunch from home rather than eating out just one day will keep you in 93 octane for the next 1000+ miles. There's absolutely no point in putting less than premium in your car.

We have 93 octane as normal premium here. I just paid 23 cents more a gallon than the 87 octane regular price for 93 octane.

This is good news.
My 05 WRX's gas light would come on with one gallon remaining. Which is a hassle when my car only got 22mpg.

i'm getting 350-400 miles per tank. I have a feeling after break in miles is going to change that!

Out of curiosity, have you ever found anything definitive to back this up?

This is one of those things that "everybody" seems to know and repeat to each other ad naseum . . . but frankly, it hasn't been my experience at all, and logically doesn't make much sense.

Hell, my car has an electric fuel pump that works exactly the same as a modern one, and it sits outside the tank.

I believe the pumps are cooled by the fuel, not lubricated. The thing is, I believe the fuel does that while it's running through the pump. Having the pump outside the tank shouldn't matter as long as you don't run air through it.

Exactly my opinion.

And a slight tangent - what's up with the whole "sucking up all the debris when the tank gets low" myth? That one really annoys me.

Have you pulled a fuel strainer? There's a lot of crud in fuel. Granted the strainer captures most of it, but I'd prefer the crud stay in the lower recesses of the tank.

The fuel pickup is at the bottom of the tank already . . . That, and with the amount of sloshing around fuel goes through during normal driving, if it's in there, it'll get pulled through - sooner rather than later.

Yes, I've pulled a strainer. Also taken apart a couple high mileage fuel filters.

I apologize, I meant cooled, not lubricated, wrong choice of words... I've taken 1 year of automotive service technician; redseal level...A few years back, and this was what I've learned.

Learned from what? A professor? Textbook? Lab tests? Case studies? Empirical data? I'm genuinely curious.

Looking at how a fuel pump is designed, combined with basic knowledge of heat transfer properties, it seems to me that the fuel running through the pump provides all the cooling necessary. That, and if overheating of the fuel pump is so likely that it requires constant submersion in a fluid, car manufacturers are doing a piss-poor job of designing their fuel tanks.
