I'd recommend that you put your $10,000 down on a FR-S/BRZ.

If you plan to track, BRZ.

$10k sounds like a lot but here's how it could go down:
- $1k for tyres
- $2k or wheels
- $3k for suspension (shocks, sways etc).
- $2k OFT + full exhaust
- $1k for oil cooler
- $1k for brakes

Prices may not be exact, but close enough.

If you are not tracking get the ford.

My buddy has a focus RS, and its completely different from an FRS.

Also, the RS will be significantly more expensive...

What are your goals for a car?

Knowing jack shit what you want out of it, I say neither. Get a used 4 door civic for $8k and spend the $2k on hookers and blow.

FYI the $8k 4 door civic will be just as fast as the brz and the rs. The rs is a fat pig by the way.

If you get a Focus, you're going to have lots of trouble with it. Ford has a lot of problems with this car, specifically with the transmission. Don't get the AT.

If you're looking for reliability, the FRS (or for that matter, the Civic mentioned above) are much better options.

First off, you're assuming that you can get an RS for $40k, which isn't a safe assumption. Every one I've seen they have marked up to over $50k, which is laughable to say the least to buy a piece of crap like that. For the price these fools are asking for a new focus, I'd have a beater civic and a C6 Z06, both of which look better and are far better at their assigned tasks than the Ford.

If you want a Ford product for $40k, go with the 2018 Mustang GT PP with magnetic active dampers. I'd only consider the RS if you need the extra doors.

If you're going to track the car, the FR-S is great. Use the extra $10k (or more, if you buy used) for mods/maintenance.

Buy a BRZ. New if warranty and peace of mind are important or used if extensively modding or able to work on yourself.
Drive the car for at least 6 months before performing any performance mods. Don't mod based upon what you have read or people tell you but mod because you found something you want to change for your own reasons. Purely cosmetic mods do as soon as you want though since they are already your own taste.
After driving the car a while and deciding what you may want to change THEN start your shopping for what you want. There is no way anybody can decide what they want to change before they even own the car.

Or

Buy the RS and enjoy it for what it is (something very very different than a BRZ)

The ONLY Ford that I would actually spend my money on is the GT 350 R.

That being said, get an STI and be done with it.
