Facelifted Toyota GT 86 Convertible Render Is Food For Thought

Looks nice, but its not happening...

Quote:
The Scion brand is officially dead yet everything seems to go smooth for Toyota, which rolled off an updated version of its compact coupe that just got rebranded.

It features some new design elements both outside and in the cabin, completed by an extra 5 HP squeezed from Subaru’s 2.0-liter boxer four-pot mill, shared with the BRZ.

While the manufacturer currently focuses on the GT 86, X-Tomi reminds us that this is the same brand that gave us the FT-86 Open Concept a few years ago.

Based on the study and featuring the new updates applied to the rear-wheel drive car for 2017 MY, this rendering shows what could have been had Toyota given the go ahead for an open-top variant.

The last time we heard about it was 2014, when Scion’s chief Doug Murtha refuted claims of the project.
“So on the convertible we went down swinging,” said Murtha, adding that the company brass could not find enough other countries or regions within Toyota that were interested in a convertible "to make the thing pencil".

“I think we were pretty aggressive on our (submitted plan), but we looked at what we would have conceivably lost on the product and said, ‘We’re not going to even push it further,’” he said. “Nobody was more disappointed than we were.”
Plus, the coupe being, more or less, in the middle of its life cycle, adding a convertible is highly unlikely. Maybe next time then...

Oh well..... Actually, I think a t-top FRS would look quite good, as well.....Would retain a little more structural rigidity, too.

Then came the ND MX-5. I don't think that teal ninja turtle would hold up well against the current iteration of Miata. Fun exercise, but a tough seller.

I'm glad it's just a fantasy. I've always hated convertibles.

If anything, they should've put in a longitudinal sunroof like Maximas have, but I really don't need that either. Just another thing to make insurance higher.

Agreed. The frs is already shower than the miata. A convertible would do even worse on paper.

I am a huge convertible fan but think these cars would suffer to much from the extra bracing and reinforcement that a convert needs. Not so bad for things like the Miata where they were designed from the start since they don't need extras. I think the targa would retain at least some of the required rigidity but still give the convert feel. Not a hope in hell that they will ever make it though and the custom ones cost about the price of a Porsche so no targa for me.

The first one looked way better. Also is it a roadster built to be a roadster? If not like tcoat said bracing and other junk to make it perform. Like a gigantic halo yuck

Top down motoring in a small agile 86 would have been FUN. You really get an appreciation for all the sounds of the car and the road with top down driving. It's a more visceral experience.

If it was in the 86 future .... it would have been designed from the start. Apparently it was not.

The Solara convertible weighed almost 4,000 pounds. An FR-S convertible would be a 30k turd.
