I have a 2006 WRX and it also produces this smell when driving it hard.
FYI have the car for 5 years before I sold it to buy my BRZ.
Now I have a BRZ and it also produces the smell.

CONCLUSION "ITS a SUBARU IDENTITY I guess"

Now 1800miles on my BRZ. It still produces the smell when I accelerate after shifting gears. Normal I guess and it only happens like twice every day when I drive to work. I do a lot of shifting due to traffic.

The sulfur smell is when the fuel mixture is running too rich. At Full throttle, high RPMs not all the fuel is being burned due to things /reasons like Bad air to fuel ratio etc... the partially burned (oxidized) fuel is what makes the sulfur smell.
I dont want to say this but I will anyways. I notice it more on lower horsepower cars like your eco box cars where the engine wasnt built to be Pushed hard at high RPMs. I smell it a handful of times in my previous BMWs probably less than 3-4 times and never smelled it in my Porsche. But smell it all the time in my rental cars like Corolla, sentra's and various eco cars.

I have not pushed the FRS yet so i cant comment.

I had the smell also only smelt it once when I was driving really hard in the hills. The smell went away when I dropped rpms and slowed down for a bit. And it did smell like burnt clutch. Never smelt it again after that day.

I've heard this is coming from the exhaust manifold being so close to the sheet metal under body below the engine compartment. The exhaust manifold heats up, causing the sheet metal, which is used for aero dynamics, to heat up. What your smelling is whatever substance is coating that aero piece under the exhaust manifold.

And ya all new cars always have some smells for the first few miles of ownership. Allot of this is just paranoia that has been ingrained in us about buying a brand new model.
It's ok, Subaru and Toyota know what they are doing. Hell if anything they would be inclined to double and triple check everything. Considering there is two companies reputations on the line.

You are correct.. at WOT the engine management runs the mixture rich to keep detonation at check and lower EGTs. So you get a whiff of unburnt fuel as the vacuum behind the car pulls in some exhaust smell.. I have this with my other cars as well.. M3 and vettes did it too..
You can also get a whiff of the guy in front of you as he blasts with his foot down trying to impress you..

hahah maybe but I think its the relief valve like a blow of valve dispersing some of the pressure from the engine OR it opens the vent to allow outside air to enter for a few seconds to renew cabin air.. We will wait and see what other people think of this in this forum.

I just got a new Catted High flow down pipe today, I'm at about 8,500 miles and I wasn't smelling the burnt bag smell anymore, but now I am. So, I'd blame the smells we're smelling on the cats being broken in.

I have an A/T and I get that smell also. I thought it was the rubber when I powerslide, until I got the same smell just driving at high RPMs on the highway.

My car smells a little bit sour (not quite like rotten eggs) when I get on it.

I'm at 1500km's so I'm not too concerned. I'm almost certain it's the exhaust

This is the first thing I thought too. Most new cars do this, but it's not for power reasons - it's so that you don't overspeed the compressor.

Once you cross the threshold, you'll get a little 'musty' smell from the vents, if the AC is on.

Took mine in and the dealer said its the tires breaking in. I asked how he can justify that given the fact you put your nose 2 inches from the tires and you smell nothing. I told him that given the fact its so strong that it comes thru the air vents and about knocks you out I would think it would come off the tires a bit stronger. He had no answer. Does anybody know if they still use cosmoline to coat engines anymore? My vehicle has about 3000 miles on it.

It is the exhaust.. when you go WOT, like merging on the highway..
I get that smell as it gets sucked in the car. and then dissipates shortly after... I get it in my wifes car as well.
