There are some pics I just took. Ignore the white-out, as I'm just hiding my parking sticker.

It doesn't look very deep at all. I would have measured, but it started raining. It's hard to tell, but that last picture shows the vent duct under the speaker. So standard 4" speakers should be fine. 5.25"? Might be tough. There is a lot of dash structure then.

One last question on the speakers: how much space is there between the grill and the mid?

If you look at the pictures of the mid, the grey foam seals against the grill. I'd guess there is only 3/16-1/4" for that foam.

Thank God these mids are easy to remove. And I bet hardly any high-pass filters...

Onto the Crutchfield now!

Getting any real midrange up there will be impossible without separating the air in front of the woofer from the air behind it. Which, unless my eyes are playing tricks, the stock setup does not do. Just sticking a different speaker in there might not do much. Maybe a large format tweeter and a mid in the door if you have the processing. To make it sound right. Tweeters bouncing off glass will always be a crapshoot though.
I want to see the doors apart. How hard are they going to be to seal.

You are correct, and also not. The foam around the midrange seals to the speaker grill, which in turn isolates the air from the front and the rear. Is it ideal? HECK NO!! But it's easier for design/manufacturing of the car. And those mids don't move a lot of air.

But yes, putting in something larger would be tricky. The grill would likely have to me re-made, and some serious cutting of the dash structure would need to be done.

As for the door locations, in this car, it's still not great. Back to processing, if you had the power, then you could do your mid and midbass in the door, tweeter in the dash. Time align the crap out of the door!

Why would you even consider loading mids into the dash? I'd say, put a decent 4" high-mid woofer in there, and then use active crossover to pass only 4kHz and above to the dash.

Instead, a pair of decent 6.5" door woofers with low cut-off at 50-60 Hz will give you clean and not aggressive sound (high frequencies wise)

Dash is a piece of plastic. Getting mid-range out of it is a waste of time. Just use it as an 'extended' tweeter.

Are the door speakers really 8"? If you could fit something like an l8se in the doors with a large format tweeter in the dash the will play low. That would be system done for me.

Looks like I'll finally have a use for the Polk components I bought a couple years ago. They're useless in my MR2 which is too loud in the cabin to hear any good sound! I have two 3.5", two 4", two 1", and two 6 1/4" speakers IIRC.

I can confirm that the BRZ Premium definitely has 6.5" speakers in the door, stock (not 8"). I'm not sure if you can finagle an 8" in there or not, but it would require a custom baffle, if you did.

I just got my FR-s Thursday. Had a really nice aftermarket stereo in my old car so I'm rather irritated by the stock one. To get started I went ahead and popped off some panels to get some measurements. Thought I'd share some pics with you all.

The Dash speakers are 3.5" with about 2" depth
The Doors are 6.5" With 2" of depth. Anymore it will probably hit the window.
The Rear are 3.5 as well but the depth is more than enough.

From the looks of the pictures, the speakers are a step up from the usual rubbish car makers put in; the cones look like they aren't made from paper
