I have the 215's RS3's on stock size rims and the car still steps out on the street easily. This is basically because they never get up to temp on the street for their maximum grip potential.

I read through this list when I was trying to find information on the new Falken FK-453 tire. This survey seems to have some gaps... I'm sure there are more "max performance" Michelin tires than just the Primacy 3 that could have made it into the test. The Bridgestone Pole Position S-04s surprisingly don't show up either.

I went with 215/45 Michelin Pilot Super Sports on the stock 17" wheels. Incredible improvement.

Check out the new ultimate tire shoot out in the August issue of "Car & Driver"... The Michelin Pilot Super Sports come out on top.

The Bridgestone RE-11, Yokohama AD08, Dunlop D1 Star Spec and Kumho XS are all competition-oriented street tires. That means that they're all specifically designed to push the absolute limits of grip available from a street tire for the purpose of competitive performance in AutoX and HPDEs.

Of course this performance comes at the expense of longevity and wet weather/all season performance.

If you want to go down a rung from absolute-performance street tires and into the high performance street tire realm you've got tires like the Michelin Pilot Super Sports, Goodyear Eagle Assymetics, Pirelli P Zeros, Continental Sport Contact 3s or 5s, Brisgestone RE050s or S03s, etc. etc.

They'll never win you a trophy at an AutoX event but they'll all grip well, will probably last more than a year and will work well enough in pretty much every weather condition but snow.

We're still not quite at all seasons yet though.

I'd only use all seasons on these cars if you're either truly into the low-grip thing or are budget conscious to the point that you can't afford separate sets of summer and winter tires.

Nothing wrong whatever you choose. Just do your homework, know what you're buying & why.

i've been researching DD/'newbie auto-x for fun' tires myself after never having paid attention to tires before. I've always just bought decent name brand all-seasons. But my FR-S has changed things!

So I think I've narrowed it down to the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 and the Continental ExtremeContact DW. They are both light weight and get great reviews. According to this thread so far it looks like I'm on the right track. Am I missing anything?

Just ordered them after reading the review, thanks for the heads up!

The Yoko came in 2nd, not 4th. For some reason TR listed them 1,3,4,2. I'm surprised the RE11 scored so highly. In pretty much every GRM test they find the RE11 to be so-so. But even so, it was only 0.01 points ahead of the Yoko AD08.

You've mentioned on the last page about the RE-11's. I know at National-level autocross in the STS class (the only class I really pay attention to) everyone runs RE-11s.

I still run Star Specs because they still make them in 14" sizes. I'm unsure of what to get on the BRZ though. I'd like to try something different than the Star Specs, and RE-11s seem like a decent choice. But I've been really happy with the Star Specs, so I just might vget them again.

What feedback, if any, have you guys got for the BF Goodrich f-Force Sports and Yokohama S.drives? In the size I'm looking (235/40-17 since it'll throw off the speedo less than 1%) there aren't tons of options...I'm used to running Ventus V12s and Nitto NT555's, neither of which are offered in that size.

I'm surprised. Every test I've seen the Z1* has beaten or tied the RE11 and it's considerably less expensive. I wonder what aspect they feel gives them an edge, or if it's a matter of "The guy who won last year used them, so I'm using them this year."
