Soot in Exhaust...Normal?

Hi everyone,

Ive had the car for just over 3 months and am the second owner with the car currently having 31 thousand kilometers. Now, when ever i go WOT and get out of the car after driving, i look at the exhaust and notice a small amount of black soot in the exhaust. Is this normal? Then if i dont clean it, after a fair bit of spirited driving i find the exhaust having quite a lot of soot inside it. Is this normal?

(Refer to pictures, one is still dirty, the other i have cleaned)

Thanks,
Mason

No, the black "soot" you're talking about is just the carbon buildup due the afr being rich. All cars are set up to run a little rich in stock form - rich is "safe" from the manufacturer perspective. It will not cause injector problems every car has this buildup on the tips it's just some of them you can't see it. Also the FA20 uses Direct injection and port fuel injection. i.e. it has 8 injectors. Port injection still works much better for low rpm and idling for emissions & power. If anything were to be effected by soot it would only be the 4 injectors within the cylinders. At WOT at some points I'm pretty sure it uses both and you'll get that carbon on the tips the more frequently when that happens. Just keep cleaning it every month or so, so that it doesn't get caked on.

You can monitor your AFR with Torque to see if you're running the right mixture. It usually runs about 14.5 to 1.
