I was basically suggesting the same thing only hard wired. The only way to use the dump pack to bolster the starter is to either physically disconnect the pack back into two 12v batteries, Or to step it down with a dc/dc converter from 24V into 12V. Finding one with the current capacity might be a problem though. With the new 12V source, you hook it up in parallel to the starter battery, with a relay inline to brake the circuit. The relay goes to a small switch, so you can close the circuit, basically hooking up jumper cables from the dump pack to the starter, without ever having to get out of the car. I don't think you would want it to be hooked up constantly due to the ESC trying to charge the dump, and the alternator trying to charge the starter at the same time. Once the switch is flipped off, and the circuit is broken, you go back to stock. If you can't find a converter that will work, then you would have to put a relay in between the dump pack to brake it back down to 12v, then a second relay to tie one or both of the dump batts back to the starter in parallel. This could be dangerous because if you short the dump pack to the starter, before breaking it down from 24v to 12v you would probably start frying your cars electrical system. But this is just me thinking out loud.

My battery guy is recommending the PC680MJT Odyssey.

Advantages:-
-Heaps of cranking power compared to the Powersonic, uses them to start V8 race cars.
-Insulated inside a metal case, better suited under bonnet temps. (Cold?)
-Better recovery rate.
-Same size.
-Available with full size terminals for less resistance.

Disadvantage:-
-Expensive in Aus, should be cheaper for US guys given they are made there.

Battery guy feels 2 of these for the main dump pack may negate the need for the 0.5 pack?

Will try it out should funds allow.

just out of curiosity, how would you compare performance between the powersonics and the Odysseys? data logging boost?

Also, I could see using it for the starter battery, but for the dump packs this kind of concerns me: "capable of 100 percentage recharge in 4 - 6 hours" From my usage of the powersonic dumps, it reaches full charge in 4 to 6 seconds. I realize I am not comparing from fully depleted, but I am no expert at batteries. I am still trying to figure out how to compare Amp hours to Cold cranking amps. Based on Amazon, the price is slightly under double. ~$140 shipped. So to replace would cost $420. Which would be a comparable price if the 1.5 kit was still optional. Plus, the dump harness would have to be modified/replaced.

I wouldn't swap out the batteries for the dump pack. One of the reasons these batteries were chosen were due to the fact they recharge quickly and discharge quickly.

Was about to say the same thing. The dump pack batts are meant to be charged and recharged through thousands of cycles and they dump off their juice quickly. Investing in another batt that's not been tested by Rob could be dicey if not dangerous.

Check out Die-Hard Platinum Batteries. They are rebranded/colored Odyssey batteries. It's a trick I use for my Overland truck to get the super powerful Odyssey batteries at a lower cost. Generally at Sears or online.

The size is right on the money. The Power Sonic PSH-12180FR is 7.14(L) x 3.03(W) x 6.59(H) where the Odyssey is 7.15(L) x 3.00(W) x 6.65(H). Would only need to place a battery terminal type connector on the negative cable (battery side).

Here's where it gets confusing...

The Power Sonic battery is a 21Ah battery where the Odyssey battery is a 16Ah battery. The Odyssey battery lists is CCA as 170 where the Power sonic doesn't provide that data. But it does provide a wHr rating of 252. I'm not sure how that relates to CCA or if the figures can be compared in any way.

It's possible that the Odyssey is a better start battery...but we wont know until someone (in a cold climate) tests it.

I did some looking around on Power Sonics website. According to the spec sheet for the PSH-12180FR battery, the short-duration discharge rate (10 seconds) is 210 amps. This seems like the equivalent to a CCA rating. It also lists the discharge operating range as -40F to 140F.

They also have some good info on storage and voltage drop over time...

Here are the bits needed for a larger starter.

Battery: (used in the MX-5)
http://www.atbatt.com/interstate-meg...ry-370-cca.asp

Tray:
http://www.northernautoparts.com/part/de-00252

Post clamp: see pics...available everywhere in multiple versions.

Remove (unscrew) one of the hold down block wings, cover sheet needs to be cut/trimmed for Neg post terminal.

This set-up was tested for a couple months last winter.

Rob.

Sounds like it wasn't wired correctly. Dump pack should never drain unless activated.

If the controller is always hot (armed) the starter and dump packs will drain. Fairly quickly I might add. Alex, you can test for this by:

1) shutting down the car as you always do;
2) remove the drag reduction tube from the SC inlet (keep it attached at the controller);
3) sucking on the hose to create a vacuum in the hose.

If the ESC engages, your controller is not shutting down.
