remote starter - thoughts
I want to get a remote starter installed in my car for the coming winter months, but I don't have any knowledge or experience with them.
I want something simple and found this on amazon: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00170ZUVQ/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00"]Amazon.com: Viper 1002 Car Alarm Security System: Car Electronics[/ame] So I guess being a noob in this matter, how do I know if this is compatible with the FRS (manual)? and if it is, can I just take it to any reputable installer or should I worry because the FRS is so new that most installers probably haven't worked on one yet? Or does this not matter because this would be the same thing on all cars, like getting an oil change? |

For starters, Viper is a good company to go with, or anything manufactured by DEI, they (IMO) are on the top quality wise. The only issue you may run into with getting it installed is the fact that you have a manual. Some shops may not install it due to the fact that it can be a risk. Some shops however may be able to install a neutral saftey switch, which will ONLY allow the remote start to work if the car is in neutral. Otherwise, if you parked your car in gear, forgot about it, then went to start it, the vehicle may roll. I wouldn't worry about taking it to a shop for installation, even though the car is new, alot of the wiring is done within the ignition harness, which I would assume is very close to most Toyota products. There will be some extra cost involved due to the fact that your ignition key is chipped. This will have to be bypassed. Otherwise its pretty straight forward.

Personally I don't like treading in unfamiliar waters and my knowing little to nothing about electronics I'd be worried about something getting messed up. That's just me though.

Yeah most shops won't touch a manual unless they have experience with it. Some systems have a manual mode where you can't use the system to start the car unless you shut the car off while outside the vehicle with it still running. It figures if you aren't in the car with it running it is in neutral.

Nothing really to mess up. Its a pretty straight forward install for someone who knows how to do it. 3-4 hrs worth of labor though. And if its installed by a shop, then you will usually have a lifetime warrenty from DEI. So they will cover something they find it was due to an install error, or product error. When I worked for Circuit City many moons ago, we had a brand new MPV burn to the ground from a tach wire grounding out. We ended up buying them a brand new van.

Expect to pay around 500+ with installation depending what system you go with. This car needs 2 bypass modules in a proper installation and usually a shop will charge a 35-50 dollar premium being a manual transmission.
Also, check this out: http://www.compustar.com/remotes/RF-2W940-SS.php I have the above system in my car. It was a bitch to do. Don't let a rookie touch it.

I have one ready to install sitting in my drunk. Posted about it on the AZ local thread and found another member who has a bunch of experience and installed one himself. Hopefully will get working on it in a week or two.
