Exclamation Squeaking noise from the steering

Only when I turn the wheel slightly to make a small right turn or left turn will the car make a squeaking sound. Even if I'm not moving it will make the sound. Not sure how to find the steering fluid or if there even is one. This just started happening after the huge snow storm I had here in ny and after that it began to happen. I'm going to get a car wash soon and hopefully that's the problem idk if it's the salt or whatever. Someone please offer some good advice on what I should check for or do. Thanks
It's not a high pitched squeak like brake pad noise more dull and deeper toned

Well, ScionFR-S, you will be hard pressed to find any power steering fluid ..... because, there ain't any .....

The power steering assist is electric and the unit(s) are mounted on the steering column up near the steering wheel.

You might try giving it a good workout, by turning the wheel lock to lock several times.

Carefully check under the front end for anything that may be trying to bind up the steering (a tree branch, ice/snow build up).

I hope you get it quieted down .... keep us posted.

Yes I will definitely take a look and if I don't find anything what else could it be ?

hmmmm....... now, you got me really guessing.....

Well, back in the day, I would suspect .... but, it's not back in the day.

I could be several things.

Maybe something is simply rubbing within the steering column. Try pushing the plastic housing around that covers the steering column.

It could be that the electric motors are just cold and screaching for a little oil. Try getting the interior real hot and see if the sound goes away.

It could be something is binding the steering rack. Maybe jack up the front of the car, remove the front wheels, have someone turn the steering wheel and have a look see.

It could be the electric motor is failing. Check the fuse (#46 - under the hood) ..... maybe it's blown and the electric motors aren't working (hey, I grasping here).

When all else fails, take it to the dealer .... and they will probably tell you "it's normal, been cold ya know" ....

Let us know if anything works.

I had this problem as well during the snow storm. It went away as soon as the snow was gone and it rained. I'm assuming it had to do with the salt and or snow in the wheel wells and suspension components.

Maybe try bringing it to a local carwash and spraying under the car and in the wheels.

Just wanted to say that I am also experiencing the same issue. It happened after a snowfall and still persisting although it is intermittent.
Anybody found out what the issue is?

I think it may bet he axle bearings... Im gunna have them greased when i get my alignment in mid march... Its coming from the steering column. And as you may not know is that this sound cant be heard from outside the cabin only inside

There's no "axle" in the front of this car. Mcpherson strut bearing and ball joints are the moving parts.

I have the same problem interminently also . I haven't looked too much into it but it seems to be cold related to the steering column.

Is there anyway we can grease them ? It's super annoying
