Fair enough about sounding like something is off! You must need a louder exhaust to cover it up. I only really notice it in drivethroughs now.

No rattles here, just a hi-frequency buzz left front dash on the highway. ALmost sounds like its coming from the speaker.

Perhaps my specific car is of the defective sort then. It came with a rattle that sounded serious to me, and had the dealership stumped. I'm going to bring it in again, because if this is it progressing from the same issue, then that would be very depressing.

Once I stopped at a gas station in rural Louisiana for some coffee. While I was inside the store, I heard what sounded like my engine chirping and had a moment of panic thinking someone had started up my car outside. But no, it wasn't my car. There was a cage of bait crickets in the store for the fishermen.

No amount of valve adjustment will fix the chirping, because it's not valves. It's the high pressure fuel pump. This car is not the only car that has the issue. Some other cars with HPFPs also chirp.
Lol, I haven't experienced that sound yet then.

So the chirping sound is generated from the fuel pump itself?

Just to rule it out... is this your first manual car?

It is.

If only you could sit in my car and see that how I drive, I think at least, isn't the issue. I'm also not a self taught manual.

It's a sound coming from the gear stick when accelerating after a certain rpm.

The other rattle I had mentioned as well came with the car, but isn't in the same location.

Mine rattles too, can't remember if it's in the same gears. But I lifted up the reverse lockout a bit while it was rattling and it stopped. So I figure maybe it just needs to be raised a bit, or maybe cushioned

Idunno. I tried taking the gear stick trim off already and moving it around to see if there was anything loose, but no luck. Really hoping this isn't a big issue.

Yep. They keep issuing new revisions of the pump. It keeps chirping. Maybe the latest iteration has fixed it. I don't know.

At one point Toyota was experimenting with putting insulation all around it so you couldn't hear it. A member here on this board was one of the test cases and had the foam installed at the dealer. It actually chirped louder. Apparently the insulation was holding heat in and making the sound worse.

Other manufacturers have solved the problem with sound deadening insulation, but they designed it that way from the beginning.

It bothers people because it sounds a lot like belt and pulley issues on older cars. I've heard older '80s and '90s vehicles make sounds almost identical to ours. When they do it, it usually means something bad.

Who wants a new car that sounds like an '80s beater? And to add insult to the injury, unlike our cars you can actually fix the '80s beater and make that sound go away.

There's a belt that seems a little whiny, but no crickets on my 2017 AT 86. It's pretty much gotten 93 from Speedway its whole life.
