Opinions on Magnaflow vs. Perrin 2.5" resonated exhaust?
Hi all,
Have read what's on the board and listened to every single youtube video I could find. Just wondering if I can get more opinions from people who have had experience with these exhausts on how their character differs. They both seem to be deeper at idle, decent rasp, no drone, and mildly louder than stock. What else can be said? What are the differences? Preferences? I like the deep smooth tone and price of the magnaflow, but I also like the hardware that comes with the Perrin, and it seems to have a similar sound. But need a bit more info to make a decision. Any other exhausts I should consider that are nice and deep, add character and feedback to the driving experience, but aren't too loud? Thanks. |

I was in your boat also but mine was between the nameless 5" muffled catback combo they have versus the Perrin 2.5" resonated. All in all I ended up going with the Unresonated version from perrin that is 2.5".
Boy oh boy let me tell you that it sounds PERFECT just a perfect blend of deepness and mellow sounds while cruising and when you step on it she purrs with complete harmony. I've had so many compliments on my exhaust sound from people riding with me its unreal. I was scared that when I bought my turbo that it would become raspy without a resonator but it actually sounds almost exactly the same if not a tad bit louder, a slight different tone as the turbo changes the tone of things but still mellow while cruising with the ablity to have an easy conversation. I've also heard the resonated one that you have talked about and it is the same loudness as the stock exhaust but with a deeper tone. I personally want to spend money on something I can hear. just my .02cents |

This is a decision you will have to do on your own, exhaust sound to people is about as opinionated as watered down politics. I haven't heard the magaflow much at all on this forum, and the perrin is widely used.
that being said I think corsa sounds the best, and thats completely subjective.

Magnaflow= excellent. ONly difference is if you winter drive the grade of stainless might necessitate replacement in 5-10 years.

Here's my Magnaflow on my old car. [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2jQzYzRH2g"]BRZ/FRS Magnaflow Exhaust Skunk2 EL Header - YouTube[/ame]
Very few people on this site have the Magnaflow, so you're not going to get much feedback. I built rotary race cars for almost 20 years, and the only mufflers that stood up to the rotary abuse were Racingbeat or Magnaflow, so that's why I chose them for this car. I used the same mufflers they use in their catback, except I had a local shop weld up a custom mandrel bent catback system. All told it cost me much less than their bolt on system. Details are in a thread on here somewhere.

I have both resonated and non resonated 2.5 perrin catbacks. I tried the resonated, wasn't enough for me. I went with the non resonated, without any other exhaust mods it was perfect. I know eventually when i change my headers/frontpipe and overpipe i'll have to change to the resonated midpipe. but for now the 2.5 non resonated is perfect.

I haven't heard the magnaflow in person, however the video posted above sounded real nice! I've heard the perrin 2.5 inch resonated and non (had the resonated myself) and currently run the 3inch resonated. I really enjoyed the perrin 2.5 inch resonated and found even with just the catback the non resonated was too raspy for my taste. Even when i was fully catless the 2.5 had 0 rasp (it helped my front pipe was resonated) and sounded amazing.
here's a clip of my old set up. mods are in the video description. [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTXMDbqcU2U"]Renata drive by - YouTube[/ame]

I had the Magnaflow on my FR-S, and really liked it. It's on the quiet side, but with a nice deep tone.

Just installed my magnaflow with tomei uel, man this thing sounds amazing. Really deep tone, not raspy at all and a super easy install. It's cheap too like $610 on Amazon.

Thanks very much for all the feedback. My analysis paralysis did not last too long, lol, just pulled the trigger on the 2.5" resonated Perrin.
Will post up my impressions after the install. |

I think you made the right choice. If you ever decide to swap out the header, things are going to get much louder and the resonated perrin will serve you well. On my setup (uel, catted front pipe, resonated perrin) it's borderline too loud but it sounds great.
