You pretty much have to focus on the screen to be able to select properly.

I think this is just a matter of them putting the cart before the horse. In a few years the autonomous driving or voice activation technology will nullify this concern. There is also auto climate control, steering wheel controls, voice navigation, etc. The difference between continually texting while driving and using a control for a second or two is not really comparable.

Do you want to rewrite that? A second or two can kill you and someone else.

Not to mention that they are butt-ugly.

Not really. Better not sneeze, blink, look over your shoulder, check your mirrors or fumble with your fries. The difference between that, or between glancing to a screen positioned across the driver’s field of view for a second, is no way comparable to the length of time someone spends looking down to type a message or to the degree to which they are distracted looking to their lap and back up. It’s just not. It can be if someone allows it to be, but in practice, the two don’t compare. That is why there are differences in the law.

A one second sneeze would hurt!

Glancing at a screen is not an issue. Making adjustments to that screen is. It's the same as texting while driving.

All those things you listed are also known to cause accidents though. I do agree with you though that texting is WAY worse. Especially now that they have made it illegal in most states. People used to hold their phones up in their field of view. Now they hold them down in their lap as if cops don't notice they are driving while looking at their laps 85% of the time. I wouldn't be surprised if banning them made road less safe. Cops really need to start busting people. Even if they simply come on their PA and say, "hey, what is in your lap that is so interesting!?!?".

Air comes out at 100mph and the eyes close. It is a violent process that disrupts the whole body with reflexes impared up to seconds.

They are also apart of existing and apart of normal driving behavior designed to also reduce accidents. Use navigation and possibly cause an accident or don’t use it, and instead of listening to commands from the headunit, the driver has to look at a map or try to navigate while searching for road signs and landmarks.

I see cops on their phones talking and texting too. They can be just as bad.

Only by length of time. There is no need for a bad idea to begin with.

I grew up with computers/phones and even I don't do well with touchscreen controls on a car. I'll always prefer tactile buttons and knobs that I can easily manipulate without using my peripheral vision. One day I will remove my OEM touchscreen stereo and swap it out for a base FRS stereo that uses all buttons/knobs.

That's nice. I don't ever recall a sneeze impairing my ability to operate a vehicle...

But, really, are we comparing sneezing to using flat screen vs a button/knob? It's obvious that a flat screen is far more difficult and nothing will change that, yet.

ETA There's a reason why extra long toggle switches are used in certain applications.

Fellow touchscreen hater as well for the reasons stated.

Sneezes while driving are indeed quite hazardous but unavoidable. I always do a quick scan whenever I feel one coming on.
