and i got to this point
Quote:
sudo apt-get install fglrx-updates fglrx-amdcccle-updates fglrx-updates-dev
sudo aticonfig --lsa
sudo aticonfig --adapter=all --initial
sudo reboot
i would always get this error: error - x needs to be running to perform amd overdrive(tm) commands

after running
sudo aticonfig --adapter=all --odgt

so i said fuck this after messing with it for a few hours, installed BAMT, and was up and mining within 30 mins or so.

How lazy of you not to figure it out

The issue you probably ran into was that you didn't export DISPLAY=:0 and xhost +localhost before running that command.

This is the guide I followed for the most part. I compiled sgminer though. BAMT ran funky for me at first, but I think it was more of a GPU config issue now that I think about it. Not having the web interface might give me an excuse to learn some Node.js and make something.

It is a universally know fact that W8 sucks balls...

W7 or bust... All my rigs are running W7 rock solid.

Man. It's terrible. Week back it gave me the repairing boot loop.

Oh hey we herd you didn't like your install. So we're going to design a recovery series that doesn't work but looks like it might so it takes an extra hour to give up and reformat

Luckily OS X is where everything important is in the house

I've read W7 has issues when you start using 5-6 GPUs and W8 is the only solution.

ASRock mining mobo is in stock now. Just bought one, lol. I've spent so much money on this mining stuff already. Really hope I can break even within a couple of months...

So I decided to do a little research cause I was interested; this is honestly the first time I've heard of this.

In short, I'm horribly confused and unsure what it is I'm looking at or the benefits to mining.... Does this translate to actual currency at some point or is this digital currency stand-alone and accepted by certain businesses?

Basically, you mine and earn digital currency (usually in bit coins). With bit coins, you can exchange it for USD. The exchange rate for BTC to USD is always fluctuation (just like real currency). You can also use BTC to make online purchases but not a lot of online retailers accept it as a form of payment.

I'm with you on this.. I read about it on here and have been trying to understand the mining part of this.. I have a system running W7 and use it for BF4.. Thought I would give it something to do during non game times .. But still reading up on this to see if its worth the effort and time..

And from what I see you get fractions of a bitcoin every time a block is found... So I guess my next question would be how long it takes on average to get a single bitcoin...? Or am I still not thinking about this correctly?

Here's what I gather
  • Litecoin is a form of digital currency
  • When mining it's ideal to work as part of a large group
  • Similar hardware specs do not guarantee similar results
  • Currency can be traded at certain banks for USD or used to purchase goods/services from a number of small/large businesses
  • mining utilizes GPU and the higher your processing power the larger share you'll get when blocks are found

That's probably all mega basic, but I'm more or less trying to wrap my head around the basics of this.
