Unable to loosen crank pulley, even with 6 foot break bar!
I'm sure I'm exposing myself to some spirited banter but I'm at my wit's ends...
I want to replace the OEM crank pulley and have carefully studied the DIYs I found, overall it should be a very simple operation. But... Car's in 6th gear, I have my 24" break bar and, since that wasn't enough, a 6" piece of heavy galvanized aluminum who probably weighs around 10-12 pounds. I have tried numerous times to give it a good tug like all DIYs say but it's not loosening up. Instead the crank is slowly turning with my tugs. It is definitely resisting (as opposed to, say, having the car in neutral) but it feels like working against a very strong rubber band. What am I missing? PS: I'm a healthy 6"2, 185 pounder who should, theoretically, be able to do this.

pull the E-brake harder. Your torque is going towards rocking the car back and forth. Completely limiting tire movement will break it. I had similar issues...

use a much much shorter bar and smack it with a hammer. different type of force. Also make sure you're going the right way.

I'm doubting everything I'm doing right now but not the direction...
Been hammering at it like one of you suggested, either I'm a wuss or my hammer is too light (it's a rhetorical question, fellas...) Gonna try and find something to block the wheels to limit movement.

seriously, 18 inch breaker bar plus 22 pound sledge should do it. The drivetrain wont be able to respond fast enough to absorb the impact and it should break free.

The right tools!
I had this same issue and couldn't break it loose with the ebrake maxed out to the point where the boot separated from the trim. The clutch was continuing to slip with 6th gear fully engaged, no matter how blunt I was with my force on the breaker bar. I gave up, drank a beer and ordered a Grimmspeed pulley tool and once it arrived I was able to easily break the crank bolt loose using two breaker bars and an extra pair of hands. http://www.grimmspeed.com/crank-pull...l-tool-subaru/ Great tool, highly recommend it.

Get a 3/4 inch breaker bar and rest it against somewhere where it won't move and give the starter a quick turn. Should come loose easily.

yup lay the breaker bar against the pavement where it wont smack into anything else and blip the starter. problem solved

i used a small breaker bar and slapped a lacrosse stick on it. its a bitch, had to give it a few tries. itll pop eventually, i was doubtful too. im 5'5 and 140lbs, it should come off haha
i stood on the left side (facing the car) and just pulled. if it didnt go the first time, id release it a little then just yank the fuck out of it. youll know when it pops. when i did it, the crank was going with me too. i even moved the whole engine. youre doing it right from my view. its just being a bitch |

Are you just turning the disk against the clutch springs? When I was putting mine on I had to pull against the springs until they binded and then I was able to break it loose.
