And obviously no problems? I thought that the thermostat simply allowed coolant to begin flowing earlier and was in terms of na purposes, a bit overkill.

by lowering the coolant temp from the 92 deg C to the 82 deg C with this thermostat, you gain power by having a slightly cooler cylinder head and so better volumetric efficency
you also gain more headroom for spark, so the cooler temperature is well worth having
its probably not much but I bet its about the 3-4bhp mark

The thermostat lowers the engine temp from about 92C to 82C and I believe the spark timing is adjusted based on this. I don't know the specifics but the calibrations are designed around the engine running at 82C not 92C. Is your fan running often by any chance? I wonder if they lowered the fan activation temp too.

Edit: Matt beat me to it.

The fan cycles normally in summer heat when the ac compressor is on and when at idle.

I did notice last week that my coolant level was super low. After doing reading apparently this is normal and experienced by many 86ers? Where did the coolant go? I have no idea. No leaks on the ground where I park, no leaks around the head gasket, engine bay etc.

Could the absence of the thermostat have anything to do with this? Thoughts?

I topped off my coolant and have been keeping an eye on it and no change as of yet.

The coolant levels tend to fluctuate. It's still the normal level. Once the engine runs for a bit the levels will appear normal. But I wouldn't worry about it. We're supposed to have that Super Ultra-mega Blue Ice Omega Coolant or whatever Subaru calls it.

That was my conclusion too. Still odd because it make you wonder where the coolant goes? I understand that due to heat it expands and contracts, changing the level (normal obviously) but the level was downright low!

Yeah I didn't bother with subaru's bullshit special coolant.

I didn't either. I just tossed some normal green in my car. I use it for my supercharger too. And I'm not big on fluid dynamics and physics. Unless it involved biomechanics, which then I'm cool haha

Guys quick question. I have an oil pressure sensor fitted in the top oil gallery next to the A/C compressor. I assume the SC will foul on it? How much clearence is there underneath the SC and the engine?

Looks like I will have to move it to the stock pressure switch location.

killboydotcom on the tube recently released a Cosworth Fr-s Tail of the Dragons video. Slowmo drifts, not too shabby.
