Yeah, taxes alone can be around 6% (6.25 here in MA), which on a $28K car is like $1700. You get credit against the tax if you trade in a car (sales price less the amount of the trade-in), but they never mention that either

So if if I trade in a car that's worth 28K, and get a BRZ for a little under invoice the OTD *might* be around invoice, but without disclosing all the info, I'd be a little "intellectually dishonest". It would sound like I got a great deal, but all I did was trade in a car to lessen the tax implications.

... and that's why OTD is bullshit.

Where and how the heck are you guys getting these under 29000 otd!?
New Mexico sales tax is only 3% and you only pay tax if the new car costs more than you're given for your trade. I only paid tax on about $1400, so $42. Dealer inventory tax was $58, tags were $67, title was $5, doc fee was $125. My total TTL was about $300. My total OTD with those was under $28,400. Obviously states like CA that absolutely ass rape you with almost 9% sales tax and the ridiculous registration fees will be higher. I lived in CA for 25 years. I don't miss buying cars there.

Don't move to Canada. 13% tax where I am... tax on the BRZ was almost $4500

Looks like they're ~$165. Still not bad in the grand scheme of spending 20k+ and saving thousands.

Can someone give me some pointers for what I should do when negotiating? I have never done this before and I don't know what to do. Is negotiating just basically going, "Meh, that's a bit more than I can afford." *walk away and hope salesman stops you*?

Today I walked in and told the guy I just wanted a basic idea of the costs. For a 2015 Blue series this is what I was given (with no negotiation, obviously.)

$28.905 (car)
$166.27 (Document Fee)
$15 (County Tax)
$2441.69 (8.25% Sales Tax)
$221 Title/Registration/etc...
And 2.9% APR for 72 months

Monthly payment with $2000 down was $467/mo

This total just seems higher than what you guys are all paying. I'm in Illinois, by the way. Oh, and this is for a car currently on display at the local mall. I dunno if I can get anything off for that... lol.

My 13 Limited 6MT was $27,300 + taxes etc in May 2013.

Don't act like you are overly anxious to get the car, if you do they know they got you. Act like you MIGHT be buying a BRZ and if the right price came along you may go for it. Also give them the vibe that you will be visiting other dealerships for pricing. My salesman told me to call him before making a final decision and he will give the better price.

And DO NOT tell them what payments you are shopping for. Find out what percentage rate you can get for financing, how much you are putting down, then figure out how much you are willing to pay for the car. Trust me, they really want to sell you the car don't let them steer the sale.

For financing I highly recommend penfed.org. I got 1.74% for 72 mos and they overnighted a check to me for the purchase.
