They never will because of the Federal mandate that for 2013 we have to use 16.55 Billion Gallons of renewable fuel. They count ethanol as renewable. The number is only going up.

http://www.epa.gov/otaq/fuels/renewa.../420f13007.pdf

I actually did a paper just this spring about ethanol in fuel and how the way America does it is very wasteful. The numbers where amazing. There is all this talk about it being better for the environment. Well it takes 10 acres of Ethanol from corn, just to make up for the extra emission that is output from the tractors to prepare, harvest and refine 1 acre of corn for Ethanol. So it is really a net loss by a long ways.

But we performance guys should love Ethanol. E85 is about 110 Octane. It is great, is just takes more to make fuel because of its lower potential energy per gallon.

Now as a side note I am very opposed to the government offsetting the cost of Ethanol and giving subsidies to farmers for growing it. I feel this is a bad idea. But I think what Brazil is doing is great. For every one gallon of fossil fuel used they can create about 9 gallons of Ethanol. The USA is about 1 gallon of fossil fuel for about 1.5 gallons of Ethanol. Most of that has to do with where the conversion factories are compared to where the corn is harvested. Also how much repair is needed between each corn harvest.

We just can not drop corn. =\

Deep seeded and won't change for a spell. There are many ways we could improve our ethanol production processes but we'll need to oust the big boys first.

CHEVRON!

We run a lot of high boost turbo cars and Chevron hasn't let us down.

Now about E85, I wish there were more stations around these parts. Closer to Bellevue or Seattle.
E85 is great!

Costco, Fred Meyer, or one specific Chevron that sells ethanol free and up to I think 110 octane fuels.

Cross posted from another thread where a user was claiming 2 gallons of ARCO caused knocking:

I don't mean to be a d!ck, but I'm calling BS on this. There is no way that your engine was knocking from the ARCO gas, especially with only two gallons. You understand that the differences between gasoline brands are incredibly minute right? The "octane rating" (which by definition is the resistance to knocking of a given fuel) is mandated by law and 92 at "Station A" is the same octane as 92 at "Station B"! The only difference between the two is the additive detergent packages blended by the retailer. These detergents do not effect the fuel's propensity towards knocking.

There are a limited number of refineries, and they all produce the same base gasolines sold to every retailer. The retail brand then blends in their detergent. I'm not saying that the detergent packages don't make a difference at all, they surely do. But any difference in "butt dyno" feel or perceived knocking is entirely a placebo response occurring in your brain.

Ethanol is a different story entirely. Ethanol in gas reduces fuel economy but actually increases power. It's very much a win/lose situation. Factor in the massive subsidies and its required inclusion in our fuel supply though, and it's a lose/lose situation.

started going to the Chevron around the corner after reading this thread, and each time the attendant has immediately started asking about the FR-S. "seriously, it only has 200 HP??" "Subaru paint sucks, get a clearbra"

Seriously do NOT understand why anyone would put Arco in anything but maybe an empty Vodka bottle to be thrown at a zombie horde.

I fill up at Bill Waters Spirits in Sand Point and at the Everett Coop station, both are ethanol free.

The coop has 92, Bill Waters has 90.

Somebody mentioned that 91 or 92 octane from three different brands should be the same in terms of knock, and I agree. The problem is, when you are pumping gas from any station, are you actually getting what you paid for? We spent a lot of time on the road logging all data, and definitely there were gas stations that, despite saying 91 octane, the engine reacted like 89 had been put in.

Another factor is how "fresh" the gas is. Costco gas isn't probably the best out there, but it's the freshest gas you will get, they have to refill nearly daily. On the other hand, some of Arco's and whatnot in the boonies only get gas put in every other month, and gas does have a tendency to go off if it sits long enough. In a lot of cars, that wouldn't make an appreciable difference, but in these high strung motors, it does.

Any of you guys ever use CFN? (Commercial Fuel Network) The do sell 91 Non-Ethanol, and at least in our ATV/Street bikes, we've never had any issues or even any inconsistencies.

I fill up with 92 ethanol free gas. It's great! I use to get about 280 miles per tank, Now i get about 310-340. Feels more "punchy", def. worth it to me.
