Salvaged 86 with no keys

Hi all

I have a salvaged 86 with no keys.

I have read the ecu replacement thread and there is no mention about keys swaps, so I am thinking that the security is not embedded in the ecu.

I am unsure if just an ECU replacement is going to do the job.

What else needs to be done. Is there a thread I cant find that covers this?

I ordered a "kit" with an ECU, cluster, security module, start button and a few more ecu's - supposedly everything you need to do a swap.

Any guidance on what I need to do is appreciated

Just haul it into a dealership and have new keys paired.

And where is the fun in that. Learn jack shit by having a stealership do it. Have an opportunity to do it myself at the moment so why not give it a go

Good luck. Let everyone know how it goes. There are a lot of threads about this and the process and not one of them ends in success without a dealer.

Spoke to a dealer and price to code and cut was OK at $230.

That was OK but the key is $560

Apparently the car is coded to the key (i.e. fixed code in car) and not key being coded to the car (like my lexus) so I can't use the key I have from another wreck as it already has another car coded to it (dealers words).

Yup. That’s the cost of “saving money” buying a salvage vehicle without keys.

That said, it is possible to get aftermarket fobs with the correct coding or an unused fob (unused being essential) from places like eBay (at least it’s possible here in the states) and have the dealer pair them.

My local dealer performs the paring free if the fob is bought from them. Don’t know if they’re just a nice dealership or what, but it could be worth asking about.
