I applied this to mine and it works.
Right, but it is only one way. You cannot control the apps from the HU screen, unlike with Android Auto.

Keep in mind that CarPlay and wireless mirroring are two different things. CarPlay only allows you to use select native apps. And only via USB. Wireless mirroring, even though is one-way, let’s you play all apps. Video and sound!

I was just getting ready to do the head unit in my BRZ. Would it be worth t to wait for this to pop up somewhere. Will it be priced similar to the 917?

I just remembered I have an old friend in AUS that I’m going to try to contact and see if he can help me out. I don’t think it’s going to be available until sometime in April though.

The 917WS I got from a forum member two weeks ago. The 918WS a relative visited NZ with his college rugby team. He bought it for me

Does the DDX918 or 917 offer actual wireless Android Auto or is it wireless screen mirroring? Or are they close enough to the same thing that I shouldn't care?

917 only has wireless mirroring (miracast over wifi), android auto requires a wired connection.

They are pretty different. AA will only allow you to use apps that are specifically released for it (google maps, waze, google music, spotify to name a few). Mirroring will give you a 100% reproduction of your phone screen on your head unit, which means access to ALL your apps. For android auto at least, you can use the head unit to control your phone via touchscreen.

Miracast will be huge battery drain if you don't plug in your phone though, as you are basically streaming between your phone and head unit wifi. From what I recall in my research on head units this is the main reason why wireless android auto/carplay is not really a thing (yet).

Edit: Well it looks like they are starting to release them with wireless AA... http://www.kenwood.com/usa/car/navig...edia/ddx9705s/

Gotcha, and yeah I was just doing some reading. I'm considering adding a second USB port to the center console near the cig lighter so I could plug my phone in there.

I did something similar. But I replaced the cig lighter with one of THIS
One for carplay and the other AA or anything else.
