Octane boosters are good for one thing and one thing only, turning spark plugs orange and fouling them. Run a can or two of octane booster in a beater car. Pull the plugs and see for yourself. Do a before and after check. They dont really increase the octane either, well they do, but its far more marginal than the packaging will lead you to believe. Just avoid them.

Depends on how much gas you have. But most people will fill a tank and put in the octane booster; which will basically do nothing.

What about the treatments for gas with ethanol, do those do anything?

like a few people have said... PLEASE READ THE MANUAL... you get one free with your car.. its a wonderful thing!

It states that if 93 Octane gas is not available... then 91 is perfectly fine and wont do any damage to the engine. It does not say anything about 87 octane though.

As others have said, don't worry about it.

I'm about 99.9% sure the first tank in my car was 87, and I've seen no issues after almost 7,500 miles. Had I thought about it at the time I would have filled up sooner but I used about 3/4 of the tank before filling up again.
