I think buying my first car is what got me into cars. Doing all the research about what car I wanted and all that spiraled outward into looking at different cars just because I thought they were neat. I think my love for motorcycles also played a part because its not too big of a logical jump from liking riding/fixing dirt bikes to liking doing the same stuff with cars.

When I was very young we had a Motorific set. My favorite car was the Mercedes. Memories are strange, every time I see one I get transported back to our living room floor when I was about 6. Smells, everything.

Garage
Neighbor growing up had an old Buick, and a Packard, and my dad was a tool maker, with a small machine shop at home, so...eventually dad started making parts for the local antique car guys, which led to shows. The street rods got my attention, and about that time I got a subscription to Hot Rod, dad took me to some drag races, and the local dirt track.

...even before that though, Hot Wheels, and Matchbox cars, and taking apart any toy car I could get hold of. I think I was just born this way.

As for my story... My parents owned a pizza shop in upstate NY. Drunk people want pizza late at night, and your average driver (kids) couldn't stay out till 2am. Lucky for me, my dad didn't tell me that when I was 'offered' the job when I was 16. Turns out, not ruining hot pizza on what I now call the twisties is hard (Cheese slides off). I must have killed like 20 pizzas before someone complained (yay drunk people!). Rather than tell me just to slow down like a rational person he just gave me some 'lessons' in driving he learned from watching racing (SMH now right?). Well, hes not really an expert, but it somehow worked and I started making it into a game to see how quickly I could make the round trip without ruining the pizza (no one is on those roads after midnight anyway). I guess that's how I came to like driving and fun cars.

Still have mine. The exhaust tips are broken and the chrome is gone from the bumpers. I put a faster more modern chassis under it, so I guess it is a resto-rod now.

I originally was obsessed with computers. Benchmarking, world record attempt overclocking runs with dry ice and phase change cooling, making custom computer cases and whatnot. Naturally after my first car, a Corolla rusted into a pile, my natural curiosity for how things work kicked in.

I knew cars could be modified and upgraded, but knew nothing about it and wanted to learn. My next few cars were e36 BMWs, Mitsubishi 3000GTs (I know, I know) and since then I've spent nearly every day discussing and researching all sorts of different platforms to understand what I like best in a car and what meets my needs as a driver. I love it and think it's a great way to spend some hard earned green with an immediate ROI in excitement and engagement with something you'd be doing anyway.

I lived in the middle of nowhere growing up. And, I went to a K-12 school. I got into cars by watching the older kids leave at lunch break. My closest friend lived 10 miles away; a long bike ride round trip.

Cars = Freedom

I love the feeling of leaving on a road trip. Gas card, Check! Co-Pilot, Check! GPS, Check! (LOL!) So many possibilities, so much highway to explore, almost endless roadside attractions: America the Beautiful!

Mine probably got recycled into soup cans or something about 45 years ago.
