Tommi Mäkinen, the four-time world champion who was unbeaten on Neste Oil Rally Finland between 1994-1998, turned high-speed chauffeur earlier today when he drove a very important guest through a section of the Kakaristo stage.

Mäkinen was at the wheel of a four-wheel-drive Toyota GT86, which his Tommi Mäkinen Racing operation has built at the behest of Akio Toyoda, the Toyota Motor Corporation President and CEO.

Toyoda accompanied Mäkinen for the run, which began at 11:07 local time and included the famous Kakaristo junction. They started the stage behind the 00 course car but intentionally stopped shortly after a purpose-built jump located at 11.4 kilometres where a delegation from TMC was gathered in a hospitality area.

"It was 11 years ago I drove here last and I had such nice memories," Mäkinen told WRC.com. "I enjoyed it. There was good grip and I´m sure Mr Toyoda enjoyed it a lot too."

Toyota has a strong record on Finland´s WRC counter, scoring outright wins in 1975 (Hannu Mikkola), 1990 (Carlos Sainz) and 1993 (Juha Kankkunen). However, Toyoda-san wouldn´t comment on a possibility of a competitive return to the Finnish stages in the future when he spoke to WRC Live.

"I came here to learn about the WRC but what I found out was Toyota´s DNA of rallying is really a lot," he said. "As a top guy of the company I want to continue that kind of legend but Toyota is a company so I have to show everybody that Toyota needs rally to make car fans and make better cars. We don´t know yet but please look at our activities in the future."

Toyoda-san has been in Finland for much of the week on a fact-finding mission and took the opportunity to drive the TMR-prepared Toyota GT86 on a gravel stage on Thursday under Mäkinen´s supervision.Julkaistu: 1.8.2014 17:01

I find the part about the AWD GT86 specifically being built at the behest of Akio Toyoda interesting given the sudden resurgence of 300hp turbo AWD GT86 rumors for the next gen.

I love the car. I like the low HP because it means good mpg as a DD, and let's me as a beginner racer learn how to drive a car near its limit at less intimidating speeds. I don't need fancy interiors or armrests. I suppose if I could change something, I'd change the front fascia. I don't particularly like the Miata-like smiley face. The FRS's "frown" is better, IMO. But they don't have FRS in WRB!

Its the same clock from the Supra. Toyota apparently needed to get rid of their inventory, lol.

My last car was a BMW 335i with 400hp+.

I gave up many creature comforts and tons more power when switching to this car. (some people think I'm crazy but I had my reasons)

But unlike most of the people in this thread, I wouldn't really change a damn thing out of the box. People complaining about the wheels or tires need to wake up; OEM's never put perfect wheel/tire/suspension set ups on factory cars, even if it's a "performance" edition. Hence why people slam/stance/modify STi's/M3's etc. These are all things that can (and in my case, eventually will) be changed and remedied easily. I agree that the tail-lights were a mistake, but again easily remedied, and is probably one of the best mods you can do to this car looks-wise.

I have had a few minor annoyances in my first month of ownership (I believe I am currently experiencing what seems to be known around here as the "cricket"...I'll have to do some more reading to confirm), but over-all I actually love this car way more than my BMW.

Side-note: I believe us Canadians got a different head-unit for the stereo, as the one in my car has hard buttons to change tracks.

nothing anyone else hasnt mentioned, top of my list sunglass holder, easier to manage head unit and some hard buttons to change volume / track (station) would be nice.
