According to a 1986 Top Gear episode Mazda intentionally styled the FC Turbo II after the Porsche 924S (which had been on sale for years before the FC) as that was the demographic they were targeting.

For a 2 seater that's quite big and let's be real the FRS/BRZ is not that small.

If they had not added the aluminum bits to the 981 it would clock in around the same weight as a 996.

Huh? The 996 weighs 29xx as well. I believe the comment about the Boxster looking or "being" massive is because the new 981 has a huge freaking ass. Considerably larger than the 987. It's weight was held in check but the car is larger than the 987 in all measurable exterior dimensions...much to my displeasure. Can't any of these damn car makers STOP making each successive model LARGER?!?

>:-(

Pretty sure the weight that they listed for the 996 was dry, because if you go on Rennlist no one has a sub 3000 pound stock 996 (or any watercooled 911 for that matter lol). Damn, I feel like that would be a fun goal though...16" wheels, fiberglass body panels, and a smaller battery would not be that expensive lol.

The 981's ass is bigger primarily because they raised it to improve aerodynamics (I was always confused by the 986's horrible-aerodynamics-by-choice), however the 981 definitely looks bigger than a 987 or 986, which is already a pretty large 2 seater. I'm with you here, just shrink the damn thing to 986 size, that was a nice sized sports car.
