I like to set the sound more to the rear but it appears that the door speakers are directly wired into the dash lines so if I fade to the rear then they disappear completely. Since the phone only works through the door speakers I have to crank the volume to 30 and even then can hardly hear what is being said. My 14 with the old head unit that uses the amp had none of these concerns and actually sounded pretty good.
This is my only disappointment with this car since I had better sound out of the single paper cone dash mounted speaker and AM radio in my 58 Chevy!

Maybe there is a way to repin the connectors?
You hadn't installed one rear speaker with a reverberator?

Mine looks like that on alternate days. It will then look like a southern one for a solid 4 months.

this is super unfortunate. one of the main reasons i passed on the 2019 trd model aside from color was that I heard the new head unit was finally going to be updated to support android auto.

is this issue specific to the 2020 86 or is it an issue for 2020 BRZ owners too?

Don't know if they are hooked up the same but they appear to be totaly different.

Im guessing Subaru doesnt have this issue, they use their own starlink system or something like that. I dont know if its a different system than what they used starting in the 2017 model year refresh. (or 2018....dont know when their HU changed)

Toyota used the same pioneer system (well i think from 2016-2019, olders cions had an older HU) until the 2020 model year when it changed to what seems like a JBL unit.

I'd have to hear the 2020 in person. I dont mind the older HU, even without apple carplay/android auto. But it would be nice to get some NAV instructions without having to look at the phone.

The NAV instructions and cell phone calls come through the door speakers and are almost inaudible at even the highest volume. I am 100% convinced that the amp bypass for the door speaker just hooks them up with the dash ones. Since the door ones were meant to be powered it results in just a nasty tinny sound that is overpowered by the dash speakers when playing music and a slight whisper when NAV or phone calls are made.
The system in my FRS was an audiophiles dream compared to this seemingly cobbled together piece of total shit! It is my single complaint with the car. As I have said before the single cone paper speaker powered by a tube set AM radio in my 58 Chev sounded better than this thing. I am hoping that somebody comes up with a way to resolve this so I don't have to fork out cash to replace it.

It looks like google update Android Auto recently. I'll check it out to see if it fixes some of my issues and to see if I can replicate some of your woe.
They do seem to keep diligently working and updating it.

Ultimately I believe the stock head unit will need to go to fix my issues.
