Will this encourage the competitors to enter the market?

Do people on this forum think FR-S/BRZ will encourage the competitors to re-enter the market? Such as new sylvia, nex-gen RX-7/8 or a light weigther FR coupe from Honda?

If the numbers are good, yes of course.

If the FRS/BRZ sells out and demand lasts for a good 2 years, I bet they will join in. Everything revolves around money. If the FR-S is a hit with enthusiasts, but still hardly profitable, I doubt the others will join in.

IMO: Hyundai started the "rwd" small coupe revolution they just went too big/heavy but the plan/formula was there.

Yes and it is about time. If this car is under 24k for a well equipped model then it will change things for everyone.

If you mean cars in the low/mid $20k's within the past couple years, then yes. Otherwise, the Nissan 350Z was a big deal a decage ago, not to discount that BMW has been doing it non-stop since the 60's, and the Corvette even longer.

Yeah within the past couple years When the 350Z was launched I think it did force the hand of Hyundai a lot more for a small/rwd/coupe

I think its possible to see a new RX, or and FR Honda. But for S16, I don't think so? nissan already got GTR, 370Z, and G37s

I wish I'm wrong, cuz I like the idea of S16 that weights ~2700lbs and has the new 1.6L turbo engine married to a 6mt

it probably may have the Rev match downshift Manual transmission.

Perhaps a Juke 1.6L T engine

your right, but in that era the yen was weak, and there was a strong market for sports car.

Now, the yen is strong and also most people buy boring suv/sedan

If the BRZ/FRS sells really well, you can bet that other car makers will want to make their own. The problem with that is that these makers will be behind the competition. It may not be worth the investment if these companies find that developing this type of car takes too much R&D time.

I'm going to go the other way and say that the others have got some things on the back burner and may be ready to bring new product to market as soon as '13, '14, '15, depending upon market conditions. A successful FT-86 can only benefit us consumers because other mfrs. will not want to be left out of the action. And I'm just thinking of Japan here. Europe could come in with all kinds of nice things (though perhaps not as reasonably priced).

Nissan will do it before Honda will. Honda is dead (in the FR market), but they got a new NSX coming. But that ain't gonna be a cheap.


If the AS1 is sucessful, the Hyundai will come out with a lighter smaller genesis, and nissan will come out with a new SILVIA. They have the engines. Supposedly the next Altima is getting a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder with turbo or supercharging. And the 1.6 liter Turbo Juke engine would work too. And Hyundai has a excellent 280 HP 2.0 liter turbo and a upcoming 204 HP 1.6 liter turbo.

Remember is has to be FR.

Honda should bring back the Prelude and make it FR and light weight!
Mazda already said they are making a new RX7 but the RX7 is in the same class as the 370Z and upcoming Toyota Supra. It is FR but not cheap. Plus a new Z car will be out in 2014 or 15.
