sequential turbos are pretty common on diesels because they can handle some serious air and dont have air/fuel ratios other than to much fuel. One problem other than tons of piping is getting the oil temp down. even triples turbos are getting more common, 2 into 1 setups

What about 2 turbos feeding 2 turbos... a double compound setup...talk about oil cooling?! You would probably have more piping and turbo displacement than actual engine displacement

Why anyone would want to squeeze in two turbos on a small car when most cars that come with two turbos are trying to find a way to run singles is beyond me.
Supra, Skyline, S4, etc all make better power with a single turbo than two smaller turbos.

I think you are getting confused between the USDM (smaller CT12B turbos) and JDM (larger CT20A turbos). The above sizing you have stated is USDM sizing. The first pair of numbers (52/44) is for the turbine wheel and the second pair of numbers (58/39mm) is for the compressor wheel.

Someone just needs to be crazy enough to try and plop 4 small turbos lower the CR a lot, so those turbos would do something...but at that stage you'd do it just do say you did it.

Yep, same size on both. Early twin turbo setups where parallel (1G-GTE, 1JZ-GTE) and one can make the stock twins on the 2JZ act the same way. Turbo tech has come a hell of a long way, so a twin setup isn't really needed unless it's for packaging reasons (usually on an engine that isn't inline). Probably the cheapest way I know to get much the same performance is with a quick spool valve (Sound Performance makes them) and a nice modern turbo. Been done. People knock on the Camry, but the V6 model has always been a bit of a crazy sleeper. Got a beater one and it makes ricers cry Quote:
Not exactly. It's just cheaper to go single. It's been years since I've seen the car, but there was a rare twin setup for the MKIV Supra that make pretty crazy power and the torque band was pretty nice too. It's just a hell of a lot more work to get much the same goal (turbos aren't cheap, fitting all the piping, running all the lines, etc). I've seen compound setups on Supras before. Never seen them really pushed to their limit though, was mostly done as a proof of concept. |
