TRD Canards w/ No Drill?
Hey all
I was wondering if it'd be possibly to install the TRD Canards without drilling into the front bumper? I see that they're also attached with 3M backing tape and that stuff is supposed to be pretty strong. Would there be any issues if I shaved down the protruding tabs and had just the 3M holding it down?

I don't know how much down force they actually generate but I could see them possibly ripping off at high speeds and maybe taking your paint with them.

You must have never stuck your hand out the car window on highways. I can generate massive downforce with just my hand. Imagine a properly designed and placed canard.

Exactly. This is also at probably 65-70 mph. If he tracks his car or just decides to do a 135mph run down the freeway one night I can definitely see the 3m tape giving out.

I also always assumed that 3M auto rated tape was removable w/o damage

Well I don't know if it would actually rip off paint but think about how much more 3m tape there is holding on a spoiler compared to a little strip that would be holding a canard on.

drill it. 3m wont hold it. the only two spoilers that use 3m tape on this car that i know of is trd and 5axis. both are low profile and stick within the slip stream of the car. cannards will be hit full force by the wind. besides, why do you want to 3m it? so you can remove it later? if it can hold on till then, it will probably take away paint when you try to remove it.

Just think about the force generated by the spoiler, it's more perpendicular to the mounting surface than a canard, where it's nearly parallel to the mounting surface. So in once instance, you'll have a good amount of force promoting adhesion between the surfaces bonded by the tape, and in the other instance you have a good amount of force trying to rip apart the two surfaces, at an angle nonetheless. Also, properly bonded 3M tape is not supposed to be removable. Why are people so scared of drilling into plastic, but okay w/ using permanent adhesives?
