My conscience couldn't let me rest until I re-adjusted the skew hoses. I'm glad I did, they started "taking on" the shape they were in in the previous photo. And now there is a nice pic with the wheels off I'm getting quite good at jacking my car. I did this quickly before work |

Looks like it’s a great charity event and great learning experience/fun day for the 86 community, I am doubtful about participating. In addition to my stock brakes (of 3 years) not being in their best condition and being busy season/month at work…. I am also a Pansy lol My insurance company (Alexander Forbes) are also pansies – “Regarding the Track insurance we don’t accept that type of risk.” I personally have no track experience, and do not trust myself - as the only skill I have with driving is…. Grand Turismo 2 to Grand Turismo 5. I did try researching Redstar (On Youtube) and it looks like there isn’t many barriers/walls that can cause a crash? Out of interest – does anyone here track their car without track insurance? I should get an idea by the end of this week if I can participate, And if not… I will definitely come to the event (As a spectator) to support the charity. |

@FT_86_SM_GP - I totally respect your concerns, and you're not a pansy.
It makes me think back to my first outing on track - I was terrified. (Unnecessarily, I soon found out) Here's some food for thought... Regarding tracking your car in general: - There are no taxis on racetracks - There are no intersections, and no impatient idiots jumping the lights - There's no traffic coming in the opposite direction. Everyone's going the same way and at roughly the same speed - There's no trees, pedestrians, parked cars, ditches or pavements at the side of the track - There are no potholes, roadworks, or other nasty surprises - There are no cops, no speed limits, and no speed traps - There are flag/fire marshals everywhere to warn you of hazards ahead and provide immediate fire response - There's an ambulance and paramedics on duty out on the track Regarding this event at Red Star in particular: - Due to the many sharp corners, speeds are low - Runoff areas are enormous, and the runoff areas are smooth and grassed - The only real "obstacle" is the pit wall, so just be careful coming into the pit straight - You'll be in the novice group who will all be just as unsure as you are and taking it just as slowly and carefully - Anyone acting irresponsibly will be kicked off Ignore peer pressure and don't push yourself to do anything you're not comfortable with. Everyone was a beginner once, and they still remember that... You and only you chooses how fast you want to go, and how much risk you want to take.

I also remember my first session out, sweaty palms, heart beating ... And at the end smiles and elation.
Couldn't have said it better @Fish Eagle maybe just to add though, that for the first session, the novice class will be following behind a car (probably @Fish Eagle) so he can show you the lines etc. This is done slowly so you can build your confidence. That's the key, to build up slowly and keep within your own limits and experience. It goes wrong when guys don't realize their inexperience and think they're Michael Schumacher. It's a very different way of driving that you have to learn and adjust to. Ironically, being a pansy is exactly what you want. You'll be more open to learning and more importantly you'll learn it safely which will make you a much better driver at the end of the day. Otherwise, as mentioned, the great thing about Red Star is that if the red mist descends there's pretty much nothing to hit. Last time I was there, I was helping someone with his lines when he had an off and didn't even slow down Just onto the grass and power out, it really is a relatively safe track. Come and enjoy the company, but more importantly come and enjoy your car and leave a far better and more confident driver.

Here's a map of Red Star anti-clockwise which I believe is the direction that we'll be running.
If you're a novice, it helps a lot to memorise the track layout using the map and the video which I'll upload shortly. Whenever I go to a new track, I do exactly that. Over and over again until I know the track by heart. Your brain can only handle so much, and your first outing on track is a sensory overload. You'll be trying to work out where the track goes next, the line through the corner, and keeping your car under control and shifting and braking all at the same time. The more you can memorise, the easier it is because then you can relax and focus on and enjoy driving your car. Edited to add - guess what the section between turn 4 and turn 8 is called?

Here's a video of Red Star. If you're a novice, you'll be going quite a lot slower than that.
Videos are misleading - I can assure you that the corners are a lot sharper than they look, and I'm caning it in the video. The first observation (surprise) when getting onto a racetrack = jislaaik, I never thought the corners would be so sharp!! And Red Star is very, very tight. But that's great - sharp corners mean lower speeds, more safety, and the confidence to safely explore your car's handling. Try to memorise the track layout and the lines, but ignore the speeds. A novice will be 15-20% or more slower in the corners. Concentrate on being smooth, being smooth, and being smooth, because smooth = fast. PS: The lap actually starts at the pits. I start and finish my laps on the long straight because it give an extra logged lap per session. [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RK81GwHqtwM"]Red Star 2015-06-17 2m23.3 - YouTube[/ame]

There is some great info and advice going here, thanks!
I have a logistical question for the day - where you do put all your stuff when the car is on track? Bags, cooler boxes, tools... Do you drop it in your pit stall or something? Will it be safe? I think it could be quite easy for someone to walk past and "help themselves" to some tools, or a beer xD And how long does motor oil last? I still have half a bottle (opened of course) from a few months ago that I was planning on bringing in case I need a topup. Does it last or must I throw it away? Is it worth bringing a jack and jack stands? I only have a 2ton trolley jack and it's large and heavy as ****. Or can these be borrowed as needed? |

I wouldn't leave cameras and electronic equipment lying around in the pits, but tools, wheels, coolerboxes, helmets, food, etc should be fine. There's always people around because only one class is out on the track at any time. Here's a typical Red Star pit pic taken off my dash video.
