I’m in Tokyo now, any places near Shinjuku to check out JDM new cars?

Any car dealerships near Shinjuku and Shibuya worth visiting

Dealerships in Japan aren't quite like what they are in the US. They are more like boutique shops there unless you go out to the suburbs.

Unfortunately, the Toyota Auto Salon Amlux in Ikebukuro as well as Audi Forum Tokyo in Harajuku closed down.

You can check out MegaWeb museum as it is only about 40 minutes by train from Shinjuku. There is also Nissan HQ (with full show floor gallery) right outside Yokohama station.

If you are going to Osaka, there is the Glion Museum to drool over JDM classics and many more.

Oh, if you are a fan of Honda, there is the Spoon Type One shop out in Suginami, Tokyo.

Tokyo Megaweb in Odaiba is probably your best bet. There's a huge Toyota "showroom" there. When I visited two months ago they had new GR 86's, an LC500 racecar IIRC, and a bunch of other cars, plus interesting race-spec 86's.

Wouldn't surprise me if they have a new Supra in there now too.

Another +1 for Tokyo Megaweb. I also went there a few months ago and it was quite fun. Still gotta post up the pictures. But there was an 86 painted like a police car.

I thought one of the key attributes of a police car was that it had to be fast??? Perhaps it's an ironic take!!

Haha yeah. I got photos of that. Pretty cool to see after hearing about it before.

No new car dealer in Japan is worth visiting. I say this as someone who has been to Japan a dozen times and has pretty much seen all the cool car stuff one can see in a lifetime.

Used car dealers, you are hit and miss on that one.

Nissan Crossing in Ginza usually has a cool concept car on display. Mega Web is better to see overall (but all Toyota).

Next time, try to save time to visit either Nissan Heritage Collection at Zama (by reservation only), Nismo HQ, or Honda Collection Hall at Motegi. None of those are close to Shinjuku/Shibuya and all require at least 1.5 hours one-way to transit.

I beg to differ. Now I’ve only been to Japan once but for one thing everybody has different preferences of what they enjoy seeing.

Also as far as Megaweb being entirely Toyota, I’d disagree. I was just there two months ago. While I can’t recall how long the exhibition is for there was a most excellent one on the history of rally while I was there. Yeah, most of the cars covered in that exhibit were Toyota but they also had Subaru and Mitsubishi stuff.

I had no clue any of that would be there and I had a fantastic time.

Megaweb is awesome, especially for car people. A lot of new stuff (kei cars, regular cars, japan spec cars. At the time i went, October 2018, I got a glimpse of the Neptune blue 86 before it was available here, and a lightly moded orangish 2019 corolla hatchback which looked quite nice. Also the new crown, a GR 86, an LFA racecar (i think it was the 24hr nurburgring LFA from before the car was officially released to production).
Theres a go kart track there (it was closed for renovation at the time), theres also a driving course you can sign on to test drive a bunch of Japanese spec cars (I think it you had to sign up prior to going to megaweb though. I didn't do it but I wish I actually did. Next time I go im definitely going to sign up...would love to drive an Alphard/Vellfire, Mark X, or a Crown), I saw the FT1 concept there. Strangely there wasn't any Lexus products there aside from that LFA racecar.

Theres also a history museum area where you can see a lot of rally history (rally spec Toyotas are there), older car history (not just Toyotas, even some non-Japanese cars), Race history (Toyota race cars, like a race spec MK4 Supra), etc. A 2000GT is located there, so you get to see one in person.
