OP. I'd have it checked for codes, you have something abnormal going on. Does it pop at idle or anything weird on startup?
news to me i cruise in 5th around 2 to 3 K all the time, plenty of torque to drive around in the city and i've never heard any knocking...

Low steady throttle cruising is one thing. It's when one for some acceleration decides to floor at those rpms instead of downshifting, is bad.

Shift down. Even get the free rev-matching - WOOT!
No CELs, no popping, nothing weird on startup. Everything seems fine. The car runs normal. The only thing I noticed was decreased fuel mileage. The car only felt slower than normal, which brought me to my initial point of the 11 sec 0-60 time.

As far as the stuttering at low RPMs, I only noticed that during initial ownership of the car, when I would be cruising or for some reason I had my foot off the accelerator and then went WOT, the engine was infact lugging. Realized during the course of a week or so, that the AT is very happy to shift up at every given opportunity and avoid shifting down when going WOT. Overcame this with a little common sense and downshifting a gear or two.

So in short everything seems normal, the only thing that caught my attention was the drop in the mileage (from around 24mpg to 16mpg).

Just add one more thing, the guy at the garage did some test sprints at 5k-7k RPMs and between 2k-5k RPMs. He mentioned feeling some sputtering or swooshing, which I believe was in 2k-5k RPMs and above that it was fine (maybe I heard him wrong). He believes it was either the MAF or something very minor off with the DI. Which probably is also making it run rich.

Btw, these days I also noticed that sometimes when I have foot down on acceralator the car would feel suffocated, and as soon as lift the throttle up to half way, it would suddenly accelerate normally. Same as lugging? Can this have something to do with the issue or is it normal?

PS. thinking about running OBD2 adapter in the meanwhile as well and see if i can extract some meaningful data.

Just a thought, have you tried using a different gas station?

Where I live, they mixed up 87 Octane in 94 Octane and it caused a whole lot of headaches with people having to be careful.

Since I'm tuned with turbo, any drop in octane is danger to the car and I've had a bad tank that caused it to sputter around 2500rpm.

If you can find some E85 locally, try putting 5-7L and fill up the rest with the gas you usually use and see if your car starts running more smoothly.

I'm leaning towards a clogged catalytic converter or some other exhaust restriction robbing power. I also had a problem once in a different car where both front calipers seized and were robbing power. That was more obvious because stopping power was limited and the front wheels smelled and were hot due to burning brake pad. Just some things to check for anyway.

I know the tune will cut timing a bit as intake temps rise. Here in Aus we can have a 10c morning which will climb to 30c by the afternoon and it will make a noticeable difference to the power. Are you running a stock tune OP?

Yes, running stock tune.

Logged some data through OBD, here is the datazap.

It's that safe feature mode from Toyota if you try to do a dig about 3k rpm that computer to reduce power in 1st and 2nd gear. The fix for that is the Open Flash Tablet to disable it in Race Mode and accepting risk.

So a lot of people on this forum suggest using the to see if similar issues have been addressed before, so I went about searching for some clues. So with my limited knowledge about cars, i noticed abnormal fuel trims. They seem to be off. I am getting high positive LTFT, as high as 25% when accelerating. At lower RPMs or idle, its mostly within 10% albeit positive and high. As per my understanding, a stock NA should be within +-10%.

Below is the datazap showing the trims:

https://datazap.me/u/darksnyder/log-...0&data=9-11-16

As per the search results, possible reasons seem to be exhaust leaks
or injectors. The garage has suggested that there seems to be an issue with the injectors without looking at the logs yet. Further, my 90K service is also due in around 3-4k kms. I believe they will be inspecting all the exhaust pipes and mountings, fuel lines, connections, fuel vapor control valve, etc.

Can someone be able to better comprehend the data by looking at the logs? Furthermore, will resetting the ECU affect the trims, is it worth trying?

The TC systems in these cars are extremely aggressive. It was one of the highlights on going from my '13 to my '17. I got tired of hitting the button every single time I got into the car just to drive normally. Not even "spirited" driving.

What was the change in the Traction Control system? I have the same year/model brz as you.. This is my first twin so I am not familiar with the old system and how it behaved. Curious to hear about how good or bad it is now!

rederick: in MY2017 VSC sport was renamed to "Track", essentially it engages later, at higher slip angles, and also in less abrupt manner.
